Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
Oh, my goodness. These days, I have been so sick.
I just finished a stomach virus.
It was killing me for about a week.
And before that, I had a horrible cold.
It's just been miserable the last couple of weeks.
But finally, today, it's a Monday.
But actually, physically, I feel really, really good.
So what about you? Have you been doing okay?
I hope so. Don't get sick.
Yeah, it's it's no fun.
Be healthy and do your best to stay healthy.
That's for sure. Okay, today, we got a great expression to trip somebody out.
And we can just say to trip out too.
It's a phrasal verb.
T R I P. Now usually when you hear the word trip, T R I P, we think of, you know, a vacation, you go on a journey on a trip, or maybe a business trip, or maybe a school trip, right?
You go someplace with a school with your company.
But in this case, to trip out actually means to make somebody very angry or to become very angry.
When I heard the news, I tripped out, I became very angry.
Don't tell my mom or she is going to trip out.
She's gonna get really angry.
Hmm. So why do we say trip out?
What is the meaning of trip in this situation?
I'll explain after you check out the dialogue.
Don't tell coach Shane the coffee is decaf.
Why not? He'll trip out.
Oh, won't he eventually find out anyway?
I really love my coffee.
But for many, many days now I haven't been able to drink coffee because of my stomach.
So today I'm thinking should I drink coffee?
But they say it's not good for the stomach.
Well, when I do drink coffee, I do prefer caffeine.
I like the caffeine, it gives me some energy, it gets me going.
So if you give me coffee, and there's no caffeine in the coffee, I might get angry.
I might trip out. This is a great verb.
So the question is, why do we say trip?
Because you know, trip has a different meaning.
Okay, so another definition of trip is for people who take drugs, and their mind goes away.
Okay, so if somebody is taking drugs, and their mind just boom, they become a different person, they go someplace else, they you know, they go crazy, this is the idea to go crazy from drugs.
And that's where the word trip comes from.
So if somebody is taking drugs, and he's doing something really weird, we can say he's on a trip, or he is tripping, okay, and that's kind of a drug, you know, expression.
However, from that meaning, we've taken that word trip and added out.
And now in daily English, we can say he tripped out, he got really angry.
And that's the idea his mind exploded, and it went to anger.
This is the whole idea of to trip out.
Okay, phrasal verbs are really great guys.
And this past weekend, we had a hangout with my students.
And I reminded my students that in order to master daily English, there are three things you need to master.
Number one, pronouns.
And I know it sounds really easy, you know, he her it blah, blah, blah, it sounds really simple.
I guarantee it's not pronouns you need to master.
Number two, get got the get verb and the got verb.
And again, it sounds really easy.
Get GT got got sounds really easy.
I guarantee it's not.
Okay. And number three, phrasal verbs.
And there are a million different phrasal verbs.
In fact, in our last DDM assignment, we had two phrasal verbs was a DMR perf.
Anyway, we had two phrasal verbs that were not in the dictionary.
Yeah, so phrasal verbs are really important.
