Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions the Podcast.
How have Oh my goodness, today for me the weather is crazy.
Remember we had snow not too long ago and right now it is 26 degrees celsius, 80 degrees fahrenheit this is crazy it's way too hot.
I'm dying. My chickens are doing ok, but I'm dying.
My son is doing ok, but I'm dying.
OK. Today we've got a great expression.
It is... actually, it's kind of mean.
It's duke it out. Duke it out.
To duke it out. So it's a phrasal verb.
Duke out. D -u -k -e. Duke out.
O U T. They are going to duke it out.
I want to duke it out and I would say almost always we use the word it In the middle.
So what does it mean actually to duke it out means to fight?
Yeah to fight to fist fight that's the idea kind of scary, right but it's Possible to duke it out.
I guess with words But generally, once again, it means in a fistfight.
Have you ever been in a fight, a physical fight?
Me? A long time ago I was in a fight and I didn't give up.
I would not say that I was the winner.
I don't think, no, okay, I wasn't the winner of the fight.
But I didn't give up.
and after the fight, the guy didn't bother me anymore.
His name is Bruce, I hated him, and I still hate him.
But yeah, we got into a fight, and I would say he won.
However, I didn't give up, and after that, we never fought again, we duked it out.
We duked it out, and yeah, he won, I hate him but we never fought again, so that was good.
Sometimes duking it out is good.
So Duke means to fight why do we say out I'll tell you after the dialog Who do you think is tougher Justin Bieber or Bruno Mars?
Huh? They're both girly boys.
No way Bruno's a man Anyway, it'd be cool to see them Duke it out Oh, that would be interesting.
People asked like, you know, Superman and Spider -Man.
If they duked it out, who would be the toughest guy?
Who would be the strongest?
Batman and Spider -Man.
If they duked it out, who would be the survivor?
Who would be the toughest?
What about Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars?
I don't know. I think Bruno Mars would be the winner.
I'm just guessing. I have no idea.
Yeah, I would like to see them Duke it out.
Yeah, that would be pretty cool and I would be on Bruno Mars his team So if you're a Bieber believer, I'm sorry so Duke it out to Duke means to fight Well Duke actually can have several meanings But in this case Duke it out duk e means to fight and out means to the end Until there's a winner until there's a resolution until it's over over, that's the idea.
So once again, when I was a kid, Bruce and I duked it out and he was the winner.
And what's important is we duked it out until the end.
It was finished. Once it was done, it was over Bruce was the winner and we never had a problem after that and that's the idea.
So you think about other verbs like work it out.
That means to solve a problem until it's really finished.
So, a couple, you know, a husband and wife, they've been arguing.
They need to work it out.
They need to figure out their problems and finish those problems so they can continue and go back to living a happy life.
This is the idea when we use out.
Now, not always. So, you got to be careful with phrasal verbs.
And how do you learn phrasal verbs?
where you can look at a dictionary and memorize them.
Yeah good luck with that.
You need to see how phrasal verbs are used.
