Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, Let's Master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions.
the podcast. Our sale ends Sunday, www .letsmasterenglish .com slash sale.
Okay today's expression is super 3 words.
Are you ready? Here we go.
You would think. You would think.
I have three words.
You YOU would. W -o -u -l -d think th -i -n -k.
That's it. You would think, hmmm, so would grammatically implies a condition, a conditional.
In other words, if bah bah bah you would think, let's change it, you would expect.
In this case think can be replaced with expect.
expect, ex, p, e, c, t.
Ok, so you would think, lets change it, you would expect.
And I'll give you an easy example, if you turn on the light switch, you would expect the light to go on, correct?
Sure. If you turn on the light switch, on the wall, on the lamp, you would expect that the light would turn on, right?
Exactly. So you would think, when do we use this expression?
We use this expression, when we turn on the light switch but the light doesn't go on we would say oh well you would think well that's strange you would think that the light would come on when you turn the switch on but it didn't does this make sense Well check out the dialogue.
Tim's so smart, but jobless.
He should have a job.
You would think. But no.
Playing video games all day long.
Yeah. And he's so bad, you would think he'd be good.
Oh geeze, that's terrible.
It's a good conversation though.
So this guy's really smart, but he doesn't have a job You would think that a smart guy would have a job right, but he doesn't What does he do all day?
He plays video games all day So if a guy plays video games all day, you would think He was very good at the video games But he's not So not only is Tim smart, but jobless.
He plays video games all day and is no good.
Womp womp womp womp.
That's the idea. OK?
It's a great phrase to use.
