Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on. Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily The easy English expression, the podcast.
It's November 29, 2017.
Only one more day in our sale!
Of course in November too.
Yeah, our big old Black Friday Cyber Monday sale ends tomorrow.
If you haven't checked out those prices, do that.
OK. Okay, today's expression is really good, to pigeonhole somebody.
To pigeonhole someone.
Aha, pigeonhole is a verb everybody, I'm using it as a verb.
Let me spell it, it's one word.
I'll spell it twice, here we go, P -I -G -E -O -N -H -O -L -E.
Okay, pigeonhole, but one word, One more time.
P -I -G -E -O -N -H -O -L -E to pigeonhole someone.
So, what does it mean to pigeonhole somebody?
Don't pigeonhole me.
Are you pigeonholing me?
I feel pigeonholed.
Now, we can use it in all of those situations.
And basically when you pigeonhole somebody, you look at the person and you have a stereotype.
Some sort of discrimination we could say to possibly.
So for example you meet somebody from Ireland.
And they have red hair.
Okay. So this is an Irish guy and he has red hair I'll bet he can drink a lot of alcohol right yeah we are pigeonholing him.
We are putting him in a box and the box says this is Irish people.
Do you understand? Yeah kind of.
Once again it's It's the same thing as basically stereotyping, but it's for a particular person.
Let's check out the dialog.
I think I should quit my job.
Why? The pain is great.
But I'm pigeonholed.
So, other than flipping burgers, what can you do?
Okay, so this guy, he works at...
I don't know, maybe McDonald's.
He works at McDonald's, and his job is making hamburgers, flipping hamburgers, you know, from the one side to the other, cooking, cooking, cooking.
And that's his job.
That's his only job.
That's his only job forever.
And he feels pigeonholed.
The boss, when the boss looks at him, the boss only sees a hamburger flipper.
Can this guy make french fries?
No. Can he make ice cream cones?
No. Can he work in the front and help the customers?
No. He can only do hamburgers.
He can only flip hamburgers.
The guy's pigeonholed.
It's too bad, it's too bad.
Sometimes people pigeonhole me.
You know, they see me, oh, Coach Shane's an English teacher, he can only teach English.
I have other talent, too!
Don't pigeonhole me.
Don't only think that I only know how to teach English.
I can do other things.
I can hunt. I can Maybe I can't do too much.
Yeah. That's okay. Yeah.
So when you guys see me...
Do you only see an English teacher?
Or do you see a wonderful human being who can help the world become one and happy?
Yeah. Pigeonholing is something that we do everybody.
We do. We pigeonhole people.
However, just like a stereotype, I'll spell it S -T -E -R -E -O -T -Y -P -E.
So just like stereotyping, pigeonholing is not really good.
There is a reason we stereotype, there is a reason we pigeonhole people because the average is that way.
so when you look at the average when we think about the average Irish guy he's got red hair and he can drink alcohol but you know what that's actually that's a stereotype we are pigeonholing those guys it's not really true yes there are many red hair men who can drink but not all of them there's a lot of black haired British guys who can drink and blonde -haired Swedish guys that can drink too.
But we do use stereotypes.
We do pigeonhole people, because it's like the average of society.
But it's not a good thing, so just remember be careful, be careful about stereotyping people.
Be careful about pigeonholing people.
Uh, and remember, it's not always true.
You guys have a fantastic day.
