Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
It is November 22nd, 2017 minus, minus 15 degrees Celsius where I live.
Very very cold. It's really cold.
A little bit of snow outside.
The sunrise is beautiful.
Right now the sky is almost purple, a pink.
Very very nice morning.
It is Wednesday tomorrow.
is Thanksgiving! Big super holiday in the United States.
I'm so excited. Great food, family, it's perfect.
Very, very happy. So for this podcast, I'm going to call it a Thanksgiving podcast.
A Thanksgiving podcast.
That was a really horrible version of a turkey which I will be eating tomorrow." Sorry.
And today's expression is a live wire.
A live wire. Uh, the article uh, live, l -i -v -e.
Now don't say live, it's the same spelling, different meaning, different pronunciation live l -i -v -e wire w -i -r -e.
So what is a live wire?
Well, this is the idea.
Let's say you plug something into an outlet.
You have a radio or a light, and you plug into the wall so that it gets electricity, right?
Sure. So everything is, you know, almost always no problems but let's say the radio or the light is like really old, okay, and down by the plug you can actually see, usually it's plastic, right, or rubber right.
But you can actually see a wire from inside the cord.
C O R D. Now the question is, do you want to touch that wire?
Yes or no? No, of course not, because that is a live wire.
That wire is alive with the sound of music no sorry different yeah that wire is alive with electricity so if you touch that wire it can be really dangerous.
You could start a fire you could die you it would be terrible right So a live wire is something that, is full of potential, and maybe even existing energy.
And that energy can be wonderful.
It can give you light.
It can give you music.
But that energy can be terrible.
It can start a fire.
It can cause great pain.
Do you understand what a live wire is?
Okay, good. Now in daily English when we say he is alive wire, or she is alive wire Obviously we're not thinking about a light or a radio check out the dialogue So are you excited about Thanksgiving oh, I'm worried my nephew is coming over Timmy Non -stop action Uh -huh.
Oh. He's three. He's a Livewire.
I'm scared. Yeah, yeah.
Little children, they can be scary, especially at the holidays, you know?
They come to your house, they go to Grandma's house wherever, and children love to visit the relatives, they see everybody.
Children tend to be the star.
nowadays when I was a kid no the children had to be in a different room but anyway nowadays the children tend to be the star and the children they get so excited they have all this extra energy and they're eating pumpkin pie and drinking coca -cola all these bad things all this sugar and they're full of energy because of their they're visiting grandma and grandpa and seeing everybody and everybody's looking at them and they are live wires.
Yeah live wires. Especially, this word is especially great with children.
Your son is a live wire.
Yes he is, but we can use it with adults too.
It is possible to use with adults, but since it is Thanksgiving, I want you to imagine those very young children who are so full of energy and excitement at the holidays, that they are potentially dangerous.
It's true. It is Thanksgiving.
I hope that you have a fantastic Thanksgiving.
