Hello everybody! Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions!
Thank you so much for listening to the podcast.
I am your English coach, Coach Shane.
Right Right now it is late.
It's 11 .14 AM just north of Chicago, October 24th, 2017, current temperature, 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
35 degrees Fahrenheit, 1.
One degree Celsius, it's 1.
I like it. Oh yes, I like it.
It's cold outside. I like it.
The colder the better.
What about you? How are you doing today?
I hope you are doing great.
Today's expression, it's a delicious one, one word, potluck.
Potluck. P -O -T -L -U -C -K, potluck.
And we usually say potluck dinner, potluck party, potluck lunch.
And what it means? You have been invited to a party, a lunch or a dinner.
However, this party requires that you must bring some food.
And usually, you have to make the food.
Now some people buy the food, but you're generally, typically, traditionally you're supposed to make the food.
So maybe you'll make spaghetti, or maybe you'll make a soup, or maybe you'll make a cake.
Uh huh. Now check out the dialogue.
Wh -What's that? An apple pie!
I'm taking it to times.
Oh, you have to bring food to his party?!
It's potluck! Yup, potluck parties.
So if somebody invited me to a potluck party what would I bring?
Gosh I don't know. I'm such a good cook.
Yeah um bum bum bum.
I would probably bring maybe a nice chicken stew.
I do like spicy food so maybe I would bring a mildly spicy chicken stew, something like chicken paprikash.
Oh yeah, yeah, that would be good.
Yeah, I don't know.
I like lots of different types of food, so if they wanted me to bring a dessert, I would bring cookies.
Maybe I could bring a bread.
Uh, yeah. Anything is fine.
Ooh, I could bring barbecued pork ribs.
Oh, man, my barbecued ribs are really good.
So delicious. Yeah, what about you?
If you were invited to a potluck dinner, what food would you bring?
Leave a message, I would love to hear from you.
So why do we say potluck?
Well PO -T, P -O -T that's what you cook in.
On top of your stove, you cook in a pot.
A P -O -T. And check the dictionary.
Luck. L -U -C -K. Feeling lucky, good luck, bad luck.
So the idea, a pot luck dinner.
You go to a dinner, and many, many people have brought pots of food.
Some of those pots are delicious.
And some of those pots are terrible.
So, if you're lucky, you'll get the delicious pots.
When I hear potluck dinner, that's what I think, okay.
I am sure that's not the origin of the meaning, but I don't care.
I like that definition, so I'm gonna stay with that definition.
Potluck dinner, hopefully you'll be lucky and eat from a pot that is actually delicious.
