Come on! Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions.
Today's expression is fantastic.
It's a verb, to offset, to offset, OFFCT.
That's one word, to offset.
To offset means to balance something, but let me explain.
Let's say the weather is really, really hot.
It's super hot outside.
it's too hot we need to balance this situation how can we counteract this heat we could go swimming we could jump into the water so by swimming by being in the water we can offset the heat okay so it's like too hot and then we got the water nice and cool and it comes out equal it balances.
The other day about two weeks ago I made some pickles, homemade pickles, but they were too salty they were too salty.
So how can I offset the saltiness?
I'm not sure but I'm going to try adding some water and maybe some sugar maybe if I add some water and sugar I can offset the saltiness what do you think is that possible what if it's like really cold outside it's super super super super cold how can you offset the cold weather hmm you think about that let's check out the dialogue and I'll give you my ideas on how we can offset the cold weather after you listen into the dialogue.
Here we go. Oh, this apartment is expensive.
Yeah, but it's so huge and quiet and it has a fireplace and a garage.
These things more than offset the price.
We can afford it? Sure.
We'll just stop eating breakfast and Hmmm, so this husband and wife, they found a beautiful apartment, but it's so expensive, but the guy says, but the fireplace, it's quiet, it's huge, it has a garage, those are such good things that, yes, it really, really is really expensive, but the benefits, the other things are so good it balances the cost.
So even though it's expensive because it's so nice it's okay.
Do you understand? This is offsetting the cost.
The cost is super high but the nice things are so nice that it's okay.
It's a good verb. Now, I asked you a question earlier.
If it's really cold outside, how can you offset the cold temperatures?
Well, if you have a fire place you could build a fire and stay warm.
Or you could have hot chocolate.
Oh, yes. Hot chocolate on a cold day?
Mmm. Perfect combination.
The hot chocolate offsets the cold weather.
Or if it's really cold outside you could take a vacation go to Mexico that would offset the cold weather it's a little expensive there are many ways to offset the cold weather leave your ideas if you have a different idea on how to offset the cold weather how to balance how to counteract the cold weather the opposite of the cold weather what can you do leave a message you guys have a fantastic day and And together let's master English.
