Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
It's Tuesday and today I have, well it's a difficult expression, a little bit tough.
The expression is for the lowest common denominator for the lowest common denominator.
Now actually lowest common denominator, that's a math expression.
mathematics. Do you like math?
Yeah. But I'm not going to explain the math.
Let me spell this expression first.
For F -O -R, the, T -H -E, lowest, L -O -W -E -S -T, common, C -O -M -M -O -N, denominator, D -E -N -O -M -I -N -A -T -O -R, all right?
Okay, in daily English you might here that's for the lowest common denominator or he's talking to the lowest common denominator, okay?
Okay. And what this means, this expression means the stupid people.
Now actually it means the average people.
But the way people use it, it means the stupid people.
And when we say the stupid people, people who use this expression, usually think that the majority of the people are stupid.
So, this is a very rude, it's a condescending, it's an impolite expression.
And the people who use this expression, usually believe they are very smart, they are elite.
Does that make sense?
Uh, uh. Ok. So, I'll give you one example.
Have you heard about the gladiators during the Roman empire?
Yeah. So the gladiators were these men, these very powerful tough men and sometimes to entertain the public the Roman emperor, the Roman government would have the city come together at the stadium.
and you could watch gladiators fight.
Sometimes they would fight each other.
Sometimes they would fight wild animals.
But the idea was this was to entertain the public.
The public who was not educated, the public who didn't know anything, the public who only enjoyed drinking and games.
The Roman government would provide them with drinking and games.
The Roman government would give the lowest common denominator entertainment so that they could do their business and still entertain the stupid regular lowest common denominator.
