Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
722 am north of Chicago.
It is August 3rd, 2017.
Current temperature 52 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 11 degrees Celsius.
Outside it is raining.
Not too much, it's actually drizzling.
drizzling, D -R -I -Z -Z -L -I -N -G.
Drizzling, very, very, very light rain coming down.
Very nice. Nice and cool.
I like this weather.
This is my favorite weather.
Dark, dreary, and very cool.
Mm, mm, ha ha ha! Okay, today's expression is vantastique.
It is to get owned.
Oh man you got owned oh that guy got owned Mm -hmm to get owned he and once again almost always we use it as He got owned So what does this expression mean?
Okay, this is the situation You are doing something at work at school at home Uh, and you're trying to be really excellent.
You're trying to be the best.
Maybe it's a competition.
Maybe it's sports. Maybe you're cooking spaghetti.
Maybe you're, you know, cutting the grass.
You're doing something.
And you're trying to look really excellent, you're trying to look really professional.
but then your wife or your husband or your neighbor or your child or somebody else does the same thing much much much better and you look you look like really amateur you look really unskilled so a classic example was or is I'm thinking of my own situation.
As you know, I like cake.
And I think my cake is really good.
So, for my wife, a long time ago I made some cake.
And she was like, oh this is really good, thank you very much, it's delicious, how did you make it?
And I told her this is what I did.
So, about a week later, she makes cake.
The first time in her life.
And it was so much better than mine.
I got completely owned.
I was trying to be real professional, oh yeah, I make cakes and I'm a really good cake maker.
And she's like, oh really?
How? How? And then she does it.
Boom! So much better than me.
Yeah, so what was the feeling of me?
Well I got owned, okay, I got owned by her.
Now, a similar word might be humiliated or defeated, this is the idea.
It's kind of like a combination of embarrassed and loser, the feeling.
I'm so embarrassed, I'm such a loser.
That's kind of the idea.
So you're trying to show everybody how good you are, how professional you are, how excellent you are.
And then somebody else who should be below you does the same thing so much better.
So much better that you look, well, stupid.
In that situation, you got owned.
Have you ever been owned?
Check out this dialog.
John, you eat meat?
Yeah. Why, Dave? Did you know dumb people are called Meatheads?
Did you know brain dead people are called vegetables?
Oh, Dave got owned.
Three people in that competition, three people in that conversation.
One guy, you eat meat, oh man, dumb people are called meat heads.
It's true. So that guy, obviously, maybe he's a vegetarian.
He doesn't eat meat.
and he tells his friend John that people who eat meat are dumb and an expression for dumb people is meat heads.
That's true meat heads one word m -e -a -t -h -e -a -d -s meat heads he's a meat head.
He's dumb he's stupid so people who eat meat are meat heads they're stupid Now, the other guy, John, the guy who eats meat, he said, well, did you know brain dead people are called vegetables?
People with no brain activity are called vegetables?
And yes, that's true in America.
If somebody has no brain activity, they're called a vegetable.
Uh -huh. So, if you had to choose either between Meathead and Vegetable, you have to be a Meathead or you have to be a Vegetable, which would you choose?
Hopefully, you said Meathead because if you're a vegetable you have no brain activity, you might as well be dead.
If you're meat, if you're a Meathead at least you can live.
You're not too smart but you can live and some people say you know ignorance is bliss low IQ might be a method to happiness anyway the guy the first guy was trying to be funny down people are meat heads but the second guy the guy who eats meat brain dead people are vegetables so who won so the the first guy tried to make the other guys stupid but the second guy actually made the first guy I sound even more stupid, so Dave, the guy who doesn't eat meat, got owned.
Dave got humiliated, Dave got defeated.
That's the idea. So again, this expression is super popular nowadays and you're gonna see it on the internet to get owned.
Another, you might see something like this, P -W -N -D, or just P -W -N.
P -W -N the pronunciation is poem, poun, and the meaning is own.
It's the same idea as own.
Okay? It's actually a misspelling of own.
It is. That's where supposedly it has come from.
So, on the internet if you see P -W -N or P -W -N -D, the pronunciation is pwned, and in daily English we say owned.
On the internet, P -W -N, P -W -N -D.
In real life, own or owned.
You got it? Yeah, I hope so.
This is a tough expression in the beginning but after you see it a couple of times it's gonna be easy thank you so much guys you guys have a fantastic day and together let's master English John you eat meat yeah why Dave did you know dumb people are called meatheads did you know brain -dead people are called vegetables vegetables.
Wow! Dave got owned.
John! You eat wheat?
Yeah. Why Dave? Did you know dumb people are called meatheads?
E facilitate did you know brain dead people are called vegetables?
Oh! Dave got owned.
And I'll see you again.
