Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
This is Coach Shane.
Thank you so much for listening to the podcast.
Today's expression is a phrasal verb to dish out D -I -S -H when you eat a meal you use dishes so if I say give me a dish it could be a plate or a bowl probably a plate so that's a dish out.
O -U -T. Preposition out.
Now when we use the preposition out as part of a verb, in this case to dish out, the idea of out would be something is going outward.
There's an outward movement.
To dish out means...
So what goes on a dish?
What do you use a dish for?
Or a dish holds food, right?
So dish out basically means distributing to give.
So at lunchtime if you go to a cafeteria, the cook dishes out delicious food.
The cook gives us delicious food.
I hope your lunchtime was delicious.
when I was in school I loved the lunch food.
Yeah, the cafeteria dished out good food.
When I was in the army, I loved the food there.
Yeah, the army cooks dished out good food, I enjoyed it.
Okay, so that's one obvious meaning.
That's the simple meaning for dish out.
But today, I'm going to teach you another usage of dish out, which actually means to punish or to say mean things or do mean things.
When I was a child, if I misbehaved, if I did something bad, my dad would dish out the punishment.
My mom never dished out the punishment, only my dad.
And my dad didn't joke around.
He used a belt. Oh yes.
It was painful, but hey I learned, my dad dished out the punishment.
I'm laughing, but at the time I wasn't laughing.
Mhm. So to dish out, it means to punish, to distribute punishment.
And sometimes punishment is physical, but But sometimes, it's just words, too.
So if you follow American politics, almost every day, Trump dishes out on the media.
He says bad things about the media.
And you know, after watching and reading so much, yeah, actually he might be right.
Maybe he's right to dish out on the media.
I don't know check out the dialogue Sue is mad at me.
Why I told her she needed to slow down on the perfume Oh, she does boy She's always dishing out advice to you.
I know she can dish it out, but she can't take it Great dialogue so So, she is always dishing out advice to you.
She's always giving you advice and then the other lady, the lady says, she can dish it out but she can't take it.
In this case, dish it out but she can't take it, is advice but actually criticism.
The point is, the lady uses too much perfume.
She smells. if somebody uses ladies if you use too much perfume guys too guys if you use too much cologne it doesn't smell nice it smells bad okay you need to slow down use less perfume use less cologne okay we want to see you first not smell you first Okay, so if you let's say there's a guy John and John uses too much cologne I smell John before I see John So I say to John hey John you need to slow down on the perfume Am I giving him advice?
Yes, I'm dishing out advice, but let's be honest.
Is it nice? No, I'm criticizing John.
I'm judging John, so it's actually not nice.
So in this case, I'm dishing out advice, but instead of advice, a better word would be dishing out criticism.
I'm criticizing him.
I'm giving him my opinion about him that he smells too much.
Alright, dish out. It's a great phrasal verb.
I want you to Google to dish out, go to Google news and look out dish out.
You'll see dishing out criticism, dishing out money, dishing out advice, dishing out pain.
Yeah, you can dish out pain, punishment, right?
It's a great phrasal verb.
