Okay, today's expression very good, on the dole.
That guy's on the dole.
He's on the dole. On the dole.
On O -N -T -H -E. Dole.
D -O -L -E. On the dole actually means to be receiving money from the government because you don't have a job because you are poor.
Now, people who are on the dole, many of those people need that money to survive until they find a new job, all right?
In my experience, I have been jobless, and I took any job.
I've worked at a McDonald's, I've worked at a grocery store, it didn't matter to me.
I didn't want to be on the dole, so I I worked I did anything I could and most people are like that But you know if you have a big family and you lose your job Things can get really tough So I understand people who are on the dole and I hope they're doing their best To find another job so that they can get off the dole but there are other people who go on the dole and relax you know those people exist everywhere I understand maybe they're frustrated maybe I don't know they have they have their reasons but for lots of people tax -paying people we don't like it you know I understand temporary help
is necessary for some people but do your best to get a job so that you're off the dole.
So in America, when we say somebody is on the dole, it actually has a negative nuance.
So I'm explaining a lot because I want you to understand some people do need government support.
On the dole means receiving government support, but it has the negative nuance of those people who are receiving government support are lazy.
So if he is on the Dole or if she is on the Dole, it has a negative meaning.
Do you get that? I hope so, not always but almost always.
Check out the dialogue.
How do these people do this?
Do what? Demonstrate every day.
They're on the Dole.
Last year, and even this year a little bit, 2016 -2017 so many people were out on the streets demonstrating against the presidential election, specifically against Donald Trump and lots of people were really confused, how do these people go out to the streets every day, not Not just on Saturday and Sunday the weekend but on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
How do they do that?
Don't they have jobs?
And then we realized either that is their job or they're on the dole.
People who are working, people who are paying taxes, people who are paying the people on the dole are working at their jobs and these other people are just out there demonstrating.
It's very frustrating.
So, in 2016 and still today in 2017, you hear this expression and people say it and they're angry.
Now those people are on the dole.
I can't stand those people on the dole.
There are jobs out there.
Go take a job. It's tough, guys.
I know it's tough. Once again, let's say there's a family, mom, dad, three kids, dad loses his job.
He needs government support for a while.
What happens if the dad dies, right?
Or the dad, you know, disappears.
Now you've got a mom and three children and there may be really young children, well, who's going to take care of the children?
Mom needs to be on the dole.
Yeah, I understand there are lots of excuses, lots of excuses.
It's tough. I know it is tough.
There was a point in my life where I couldn't leave the house, I had to stay home.
It was a very, very difficult time but I managed to find work working from home and the pay was not good but it was enough.
It paid my rent. I was able to buy food.
I survived and you know, you keep going and I did not accept government money.
I could have but I didn't.
I was lucky and I found a job where I could work at home and I did.
And believe me, if I could get some government money it would be really nice, but no, I'm not going to do it.
But that was a choice that I made, and I'm not going to judge other people.
But I hope that other people, if you're getting government support, I hope that things turn out better for you, that you can get a great job, and that you can continue to raise your family as wonderfully as you're trying.
And let's hope for the best everybody on the dole if somebody uses this expression it is usually pretty negative Complaining about lazy people taking the taxpayer's money on the dole You guys have a fantastic day and together let's master English How do these people do this?
Do what? Demonstrate.
Every day. They're on the dole.
How do these people do this?
Do what? Demonstrate.
Every day. Huh. They're on the dole.
