Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Easy English Expressions.
Alright, today we have a tough expression.
Listen carefully. Come to terms with C -O -M -E come to teal, terms, tarms, come to terms with.
Alright, if you come to terms with something, that means you accept something, a -c -c -e -p -t.
You accept something, you acknowledge something, you understand that something is true and there's nothing you can do.
Usually it's something that's not good.
Okay so if somebody dies you have to come to terms with that.
You have to accept that that person is no longer here in the physical sense and that you're never going to see them again or hold them again or eat with them again like you may have in the past.
You need to come to terms with that.
This expression can be very sad, very difficult expression.
You need to come to terms with a lot of children, they have a good life, their parents take care of them and then one day when they get older, they get their own job, and they get their own relationship, and they realize that life can be very, very difficult.
They need to come to terms with that.
they need to understand that when they're an adult that life sometimes is not that easy and that they may have difficult situations that they may have to accept.
They must accept these difficult situations and they must understand the consequences.
They must learn how to live with the situation and the situation might not be good we need to come to terms with that we need to acknowledge reality or the new reality the change in reality okay so I've given you two examples the dialogue has another great example.
Check this out. Are you gonna do the marathon in April?
Oh no, probably not.
Why not? You love marathons.
Yeah but I finally come to terms with myself.
I'm getting old. Yeah that's an example.
You know for me when I was young I was a runner and I loved running 5k's and 10k's.
Those were my favorite.
So I started to get back into running two years ago and it was so difficult.
My legs were killing me, my knees were killing me and I realized I'm getting old but not only am I getting old I'm getting fat and heavy.
So I decided okay if I'm going to start running I'm going to have to lose some weight.
I'm going to have to come to terms with the fact that I'm not 18 anymore.
I'm a little bit older.
Actually I'm much much older and I need to slow down, I need to lose some weight, and I need to start with my running slowly.
I wish I were 18 again but yeah I've got to come to terms with the fact that I'm getting older.
It's important, coming to terms with something, you know when we were young, when I was young, I hoped to become a millionaire by 30 years old, I wanted to retire by 35 years old.
Well that didn't happen, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have to probably work for another 20, 25 years before I can retire.
I hope I can retire one day!
Yeah I've had some bad luck.
I've had some bad luck, but fortunately my job teaching you is quite enjoyable.
It's not making much money, but I do enjoy my job, so I can keep working.
That's okay. But yeah I've had to come to terms with the fact that I will have to probably work for the next 15 or 20 years until I'm about 70 then maybe I can retire I hope so okay so this is a great expression to come to terms with I want you to Google search it come to terms with and see how other people are using this great expression check out the dialogue two more times and together let's master English!
