Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on. Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
It's Monday. Thank you so much for starting your week with me, Coach Shane.
It's my pleasure to be your English coach.
We have a great expression today and well being Monday many people are starting work if you work for a big company you probably have to wear nice clothes maybe a dress shirt and When you wear your clothes, they need to look nice So, on the weekend, you wash your shirt and you take it out of the dryer and it's not smooth, it's got all those wrinkles, W -R -I -N -K -L -E -S.
You can get wrinkles in your shirt when you're older, you can get wrinkles in your skin by your eyes too.
So anyway, with your shirt, what do you do?
You make it smooth, right?
You make it look nice.
You iron your shirt.
Yeah, listen to the word iron.
You iron your shirt.
I -R -O -N. And what do you use to iron your shirt?
You use an iron, to iron your shirt.
Yeah, isn't English great?
Yeah, I -R -O -N. we can be a noun and it can be a verb.
And it's that little thing that gets really hot that we rub back and forth over our shirts and pants and, I guess, dresses and blouses to make them nice and smooth unless you have money and you send your clothes to dry cleaning.
So anyway, that is an iron.
Irons take away the wrinkles, right?
Irons, those gadgets, those little electronic machines, they get rid of wrinkles.
Wrinkles are problems!
And today's expression is a phrasal verb.
To iron out something.
To iron out something means to get rid of problems.
In real life, in daily life, this is such an excellent expression.
So I'll talk a little bit more and I'll also tell you about the pronunciation after you check out the dialogue.
Are you busy this afternoon?
No, why? Let's iron out a few things, okay?
Oh, okay. Do we have problems?
No, we have dress shirts.
Yeah, it's really true.
If you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend and you tell them let's iron out a few things they will probably assume there's a problem in the relationship.
You're not happy, so that's kind of scary.
And then when you say we have dress shirts, oh God, that just means ironing!
So this is a great expression to use at work, between friends, between the Family, any time there's a problem.
So, let's say I, as you know, on Wednesdays, I do my Let's Master English podcast, and I do it live part of the podcast.
I do live on YouTube and Periscope.
And I would really like to do it live on Facebook, but I had some problems.
So over the past couple weeks, I've been ironing out these problems.
I've been finding the problems, and looking at them, and analyzing them, and now I've been fixing them.
And hopefully this Wednesday, my podcast will also be live, on Facebook.
I think I have ironed out the problems.
There you go. Iron out, ironing out.
Irons out, ironed out.
Great phrasal verb.
And let's talk about the pronunciation.
The word again, iron.
I -R -O -N. Many people might be thinking, I run, I run, I run.
No, no, I know. It looks like that.
Yes, I agree. I agree, it looks like that.
Unfortunately no. The pronunciation is iron.
I earn, and basically it's I, E, A, R, N.
How much money do you make?
I earn a thousand dollars a month.
And if you put it together, I earn a thousand dollars a month, it sounds the same, yes.
Iron just sounds like I, E, A, R, N.
And actually, to me, that's a little easier to say then I run iron I don't know what about you yeah don't say I run I run because people will not understand really practice that pronunciation I earn but put those two together I earn iron I earn out to iron out problems to iron out issues to iron out a few things and it's possible to iron out some dress shirts too but usually we just say iron some dress shirts it's a great phrasal verb don't forget everybody I want you to get my free lessons and my newsletter you can see silly pictures of me www .letsmasterenglish .com slash free sign -up get those
