Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English expression, the podcast.
Today we have a nice expression.
Actually, it's kind of scary to break someone, to break someone.
B -R -E -A -K. Now, you can break a pencil and your car engine can break, you know, something can break, but what does it mean to break somebody?
Well, the idea is, that someone, that person, is really strong.
They're very very strong.
They are in complete control of their mind, of their emotions, of their body.
Nothing can break them.
They're very strong.
This is the idea. So I'll give you an example.
I used to smoke and I smoked for such a long time, over 20 years maybe 25 years I smoked isn't that terrible yeah and I was a strong smoker I tried to break my habit but it was strong my smoking habit was very strong even though people told me to stop I wouldn't break I enjoyed it I liked it nothing could break me.
I wouldn't stop. If it was cold outside, I didn't care.
If I didn't have cigarettes, I would walk 10 kilometers to buy cigarettes.
Nothing could break me.
Until Minty. Yes, Minty.
You might know Minty, my cat, uh -huh.
Well, Minty, one day, broke me.
She was able to get me to stop.
And I quit smoking, it's been two and a half years smoke free.
Thanks to Minty, yeah, very lucky.
So Minty broke me, uh huh, that's the idea.
So to break somebody, somebody who's really strong in a belief, somebody who's really strong maybe in a habit and their thoughts, maybe they have a secret and they will not tell you the secret.
You cannot break that person.
It's a tough one, but it's a great expression.
Check out the dialogue.
You never smile. I'm not used to showing my emotions.
I'll break you. I'll never stop trying to make you smile.
Well, good luck. I'm pretty tough.
Yep. Some people never smile.
They never laugh. They never break, they maintain their emotion, they are always the same.
If you are, let's say, think of this, a soldier, and a soldier is in war, and the enemy captures the soldier, and the enemy says, tell us where your army is, tell us what you were doing.
And the soldier says, you will never break me!
You will never break me!
I am strong, I will keep those secrets to myself.
This is the idea. Somebody who's very strong.
Now usually this is a good thing.
Sometimes we need to break people.
People who are bad, they need to be broken, right?
Yeah, they need to tell us the truth.
If somebody is smoking you need to break that person.
Even though the person says I love smoking, it relaxes me, da, da, da, da.
I understand, but still, we need to try and break that person.
But again, if you know a secret and it's a very personal secret, don't tell anybody.
Don't let anybody break you.
Be strong. Be strong.
It's a great expression.
This expression might be difficult to use for many of you, but you're going to see it, you're going to hear it, and hopefully you'll remember what it means.

Oh good luck. I'm pretty tough.
You never smile. I'm not used to showing my emotions.
I'll break you. I'll never stop trying to make you smile.
Good luck. I'm pretty tough.
