Hello, everybody, welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions the Podcast.
Today, a very useful expression and this expression is very popular in America, especially regarding baseball.
It is a rain check.
Could you give me a rain check?
I'd like a rain check.
They're giving us a rain check.
I hope we get a rain check.
R -A -I -N -C -H -E -C -K. A rain check is basically a new ticket.
So this is the idea.
You go to a baseball game, you pay for a ticket and you know if you pay for a ticket you want to see the entire game so the game starts and everything is good but then it starts to rain and before they can finish the game the rain is coming down too hard and they cancel the game they don't finish it.
So what what this makes you angry right because you paid for the game.
So in this situation, what the baseball team will do or the stadium, they will usually give you a rain check.
And that's just a new ticket so that you can come back another time and watch the game.
Okay, that's the idea a rain check.
So we use this in baseball, but we also use it when it comes to shopping.
and I'll explain that after you check out the dialogue.
Want to go to the baseball game tonight with me?
Oh I thought you went yesterday.
It rained! They gave me a rain check.
Oh can I get a rain check too?
I have to work late.
Great usage. So guy number one says do you want to go to the baseball game tonight?
Guy number two, oh you're going tonight?
I thought you went yesterday.
Guy number one, I did go yesterday but it rained.
So they, the baseball team, the stadium, gave me a rain check so I have another ticket for tonight.
The guy says, oh, oh can I get a rain check too?
Would you give me a rain check?
You want me to go tonight?
But I can't go tonight.
I have to work late, but I want to go with you.
Can you give me a rain check?
What can we go again tomorrow night?" This is the idea.
You can ask your friend for a rain check.
Your friend invites you to dinner, and you want to go, but you can't go because you have to work.
You can say to your friend, oh, can you give me a rain check.
Please, give me a rain check.
I want to go to dinner with you, but I can't go tonight, I have to work.
and we do this when shopping too, let's say you're looking at the newspaper and they say this beautiful shirt is on sale not $50 but $25 so you go to the store to buy the shirt but they don't have anymore everybody bought the shirt You can say, but you promise $25.
And the store, if it's a good store, will give you a rain check.
They'll allow you to buy the shirt next week, when they get more at the sales price.
At the sale price. So you can still save the money.
That's a rain check too.
Isn't that pretty cool?
So we use rain checks for tickets, for sporting games when it rains the game gets canceled they give you a new ticket but we can also use it with our friends our friends invite us to a party we want to go but we can't go because we have to work we can ask for a rain check please let's go next time and sometimes stores good stores will use it when they have no product to sell you at a great sales price.
They might give you a rain check.
It's a great expression and we do use it a lot.
You guys listen to the dialogue a couple more times.
Have a fantastic week and if anybody gives you a rain check, then let us know down below or on Twitter or Facebook or wherever.
Have a great one. And I'll talk to you tomorrow.
Together, let's master English.
