Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on! Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
Today's expression is to sponge off to sponge off somebody this is a great expression and basically it means to take stuff from somebody like a sponge takes water actually when we talk about sponge S P O N G E.
We think of absorb.
So we can use sponges when we wash dishes.
For example, you can wash dishes.
It'll soak up water.
It'll soak up soap.
And then you can wash the dishes very effectively, soaks up water, soaks up soap.
And sometimes people, people can do that too.
They soak up food. They soak up money.
They soak up time. They soak up space.
It's true. It's true.
Just like a freeloader.
Remember a few days ago we studied freeloader but freeloaders are really bad.
Sponging off is a little better and it's a phrasal verb.
Check out the dialogue.
More tupperware?! Oh yeah, my mom made spaghetti.
Oh, when are you going to quit sponging off your mom?
You're 48. Oh, she was just going to throw it away.
You bet when I would go to my mom's house, usually on Monday nights, she would make dinner.
And there would always be just a little bit left over.
You know, mom would eat, dad would eat, I would eat.
we're full, but there's just a little bit of food left over and my mom, I'm sorry.
Mom, it was terrible.
She would throw it away and no, no, I would not allow that every time I would take those two bites of spaghetti or whatever it was and I would put it in Tupperware and I would take it home and then at night I would eat it as a snack because it was delicious.
Yeah. Yeah, so I would always take my mom's food and I would take my mom's Tupperware.
It's true. I would sponge off my mom.
But just on food. Just on food.
Yeah, did my mom ever sponge off on me when I lived in ...
Yeah, of course, when I would go to her house, she would have me clean, difficult places.
Yeah, she would have me move heavy furniture.
So, she would sponge off me.
She would use my energy.
No, but seriously everybody, to sponge off somebody is very similar to freeloading.
It's taking their food, taking their time, taking their space and even taking their money.
If you think of somebody, if you can think of someone who is a freeloader, well, you can use that as a verb to freeload, but you can also use to sponge off.
