Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Today, I need to thank a few people, new sponsors, at the end of the podcast. You guys are excellent.
Thank you so much. Today's expression, yeah, this is a good one.
A dish, a dish. a dish.
Now, a dish, believe it or not, can have several meanings, but today we are talking about food.
What is your favorite dish?
I made a new dish yesterday.
So what is a dish? Well, a dish could be the main meal.
So in America, think about America.
What does the typical American eat or the traditional American eat for dinner.
Basically meat, two vegetables, a salad, a glass of milk or something like that.
That's the idea. That's how I grew up.
Meat, two vegetables, potato, salad, and maybe dessert, a cookie or some ice cream.
Something like that.
Okay, so the meat itself could be a dish.
A special dish. Or the vegetables could be a special dish.
But what's important to understand when we say a dish, that meal, that meat, or that vegetable has been prepared special.
So it's not just a baked potato.
A baked potato, that's not a dish.
But some sort of special potato salad, where you boiled the potatoes, you peeled them, you cut the potatoes, you added some spices, you added some mayonnaise, you added some perhaps eggs or something like that, you added many things, now you have a dish.
Yesterday, I made some small steaks, they were actually pork.
and if you just put pork in the oven and cook it, psssh, it's nothing.
That's just meat. But what I did is I added a bunch of spices, some extra spices, some vegetables, and I let the meat sit in the spices for a really long time and then I cooked it on the stove.
Oh, it was very delicious.
That was a dish. I also had a salad, but it was just a salad, salad and some dressing.
That's not a dish. And, did I have vegetables?
Oh yeah, I had some corn, but it was just regular corn.
I didn't do anything special.
I added some butter, added some salt, nothing special, so that wasn't a dish, but the meat that was a dish, okay?
Does this make sense?
So we use it for meals.
Parts of a meal can be a dish.
We usually don't use it for dessert but it is possible.
It is possible. Let's check out the dialogue.
Here's a great classic example.
What's that? This is a great veggie dish to make your body stronger.
Is that kimchi? You made it?
Well, I opened the package.
If you say this is a great veggie dish, people might assume that you made it.
You took something simple and made it very special.
But this guy, he just opened a package.
What was the dish, what was the veggie dish?
It was kimchi. Ah, yes.
Korea is the home of kimchi a very healthy but pungent vegetable dish there are many many many types of kimchi and personally I think I like almost all of them but they are strong but if you like it you're lucky because kimchi is a very healthy food.
It's a super food. Now there are dishes all over the world, every country, sometimes every region has its own special dish.
Some vegetable or some meat or some soup or some stew that's very special that's very unique that is, well it doesn't have to be difficult to make but it is special.
Well, it's not just regular meat or regular vegetable, it's special.
So tell me, what is your favourite dish?
I want to know two things from you.
I want to know your favourite dish from your country and also what's your favourite foreign dish.
Okay, so for me, what's my favourite American dish?
It has to be American spaghetti.
Yeah, American spaghetti is spaghetti sauce, and Parmesan cheese, meatballs and a couple of extra spices, oh yes, I love American spaghetti, I like Italian spaghetti too, but my favorite American dish would be American spaghetti.
My favorite foreign dish, well, I just told you, it's kimchi.
