Hello, everybody! My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me, everyday.
Come on! Let's master English!
Hello everybody welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Today oh my goodness I love this phrasal verb it's so good it is to water down.
To water down something.
Water W -A -T -E -R. down, D -O -W -N.
To water down something means to make it less strong, to make it weak.
For example if you have some whiskey.
Now some people like the strong taste of whiskey but other people it's too strong.
So they add a little bit of water, or Coca -Cola, or sometimes they drink some milk after they drink whiskey, or they simply add ice.
And the ice melts, and it makes the whisky less strong.
So this is the idea to water down something.
Let's say you have a really spicy soup, well you could add some water to make it less spicy, to water down something.
but we can also use this expression in a different situation.
Listen to the dialogue.
Oh I like that Japanese scientist. Michio Kaku?

Do you like physics?
Yeah I do I really enjoy physics but physics is really difficult and to be honest I'm not smart enough to really understand physics so I need people like Michio Kaku to explain physics to me.

It is my goal! That's today's expression everybody.
How about you? Are you a natural teacher?
Can you water down difficult subjects so that other people can understand?
Maybe? It's not easy.
It's difficult, but maybe you can explain computers to people, maybe you can explain how to raise pets to people, maybe you can explain how to play the bass guitar to people.
There might be something you're really good at explaining.
If there is, then you are good at watering down that subject.
And what about spicy food or really strong drinks?
or, oh yes, medicine.
Ugh, medicine tastes so terrible.
How do you water down your medicine?
Make it weaker. Make it easier to swallow, to water down.
It's a great phrasal verb, and I hope that you're able to use it.
I'll be back again tomorrow.
Together, let's master English.
