Hello everybody! My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day come on let's master English!
Hello everybody welcome back to daily easy English expression oh boy today's expression is very good and it's brought to you by a new sponsor, a new investor and I'm going to say thank you to that person at the end of the podcast but first today's expression It's a good one.
It's a phrasal verb and many of you might know it.
It is to break even to break even b r e a k break even ev en now to break even Is there an opposite?
No to break even it has basically one meaning and it means that the incoming money and the the outgoing money are the same.
It doesn't have to be money, it could be for example, cookies.
So let me give you an example.
When I was a kid and I went to school, I always brought my lunch from home.
And every lunch it was the same thing, a sandwich, like two cookies, and a small bag of potato chips.
and I love potato chips but do you know what more than potato chips I love apples so I had a friend his name was Matthew and sometimes his mom would put an Apple in his lunchbox but she would cut it into pieces like eight pieces well Well, Matthew liked chips, and I liked apples.
Matthew was smart, he was smarter than me.
He said, I'll give you 3 slices of my apple for your bag of potato chips.
And I said, oh no way!
That's not fair. I'm giving you more than you are giving me.
But like I said, Matthew was smart.
Matthew said, but the apples are heavier than the chips.
Hmm. And then Matthew said, Okay, I'll give you half of my apple for your bag of potato chips.
And like a fool, I said yes.
Matthew is probably a billionaire at this point.
He's a smart kid. He knew how to at least break even.
In fact, Matthew did better than break even.
He made a profit! Me, I didn't even break even.
I lost. Well not money, But I lost in my investment Now once again this usually is in regards to money So think about it every month.
Do you have an income?
How much money do you make and what about your outgoing money your expenses?
Maybe you pay rent or insurance.
Maybe you pay for your cellular your phone service, internet service, there are many types of bills, electricity, water, well there are many many types of things, health club, English classes, lots of things.
But is your outgoing money more than your incoming money?
No, that's not a good thing.
Is your incoming money more than your outgoing money?
that's great you're saving money you're making money you're profiting at least I hope you are breaking even that the incoming money equals the outgoing money let's check out a dialogue what kind of business do you want to start?
I want to Heh, you'll never break even.
I don't know, can you, do you think you could make money selling ice cream in Alaska?
Is there anybody that listens to this podcast from Alaska?
Alaska is in the northern part of North America.
It's extremely cold, polar bears live up there in Eskimos.
Do they like ice cream?
ice cream?" I suppose they do.
Who knows maybe parts of Alaska in the summertime are hot.
But the image of selling ice cream in Alaska, it just doesn't sound like a very good business idea.
You invest a lot of money into this business and will you ever break even?
I don't I don't think so.
Is there a business that you have?
Are you breaking even?
I hope so. What about a business that you want to do?
Does anybody out there want to start their own business?
What kind of business do you want to start, and when do you expect to break even?
Yeah, of course, everybody wants to break even right away, but it's not that easy.
It takes some time.
Even me. I've been doing online lessons full time for over two years and it's only been maybe about two months Since I broke even it's not easy.
It is not easy And I got to think about retirement.
Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.
I It's really important that you at least break even and I hope that all of you are saving some money.
Save it for a rainy day, save it for an English investment.
More importantly, save it for yourself, your family, and your retirement.
Let's check that dialogue out two more times and then I've gotta say thank you.
What kind of business do you want to start?
I want to sell ice cream!
But, uh, this is Alaska!
Hahaha! Everyone loves ice cream.
Heh. You'll never break even.
Uh -eh, what kind of business do you want to start?
I want to sell ice cream!
But, uh, this is Alaska!

Heh. You'll never break even.
I have a new patron.
His name is Philippe.
Okay, now I've got a question.
I'm guessing this man is from France, or French speak.
Could be from, gosh.
It could be from a different country, that's for sure.
I'm guessing France, could be Switzerland, could be Belgium, could be Canada, P -H -I -L -I -P -P -E.
So I want to say the American pronunciation, Philip.
Thank you so much, Philip, for your generosity.
Merci beaucoup. If I can speak French to you.
But I'm curious about the name.
Is it Félipé? Félipé?
Félipé? Félipé? Félipé?
Félipé? Is that not too bad?
I hope. It is a magnificent name and once again I want to thank you, Félipé for being so generous.
Philip is investing in his English education and he's sponsoring me on Patreon and you can too.
All it takes is one dollar a month and that might not sound like much, but if I get 10 ,000 people giving a dollar a month, oh yes, then I'm not only breaking even, I can hire people to work with me and we can grow even more.
