Hello everybody! Welcome back to daily easy English expression.
Yesterday we studied the expression that figures.
Today we have the expression go figure.
Do you remember yesterday that figures means that makes sense.
That's logical. Well, today when we learn go figure, it's going to mean really, that's surprising.
Wow, I'm surprised, that's amazing.
This is the idea. It's a very useful expression, but the intonation is important.
Go figure, really? Wow.
So let me give you a couple examples.
Coach Shane has a very nice voice.
By listening to his voice, probably you would guess that I'm 25, 26 years old.
But no, actually, I'm 72.
No, go figure! Really?
Wow that's so surprising.
Actually I'm not 72 but when I'm 72 I hope my voice is good.
Yeah, well the truth is if you look at my picture I'm sure it's easy to see that obviously my age must be around 32 or 33.
But no actually my age is 47.
go figure no really go figure I'm so surprised okay those are stupid examples but what's important is the tone how you say it does that make sense go figure really let's check out a dialogue so you don't like carrots but you like carrot cake.
Yep. And you love tomato soup, but you hate tomatoes.
Yeah. Huh. Go figure.
That used to be me.
Raw tomatoes, oh, I hated raw tomatoes, but ketchup.
Tomatoes in spaghetti sauce, oh, I loved it.
Carrots, oh, I hated carrots, but I love carrot cake.
Oh, yeah, that used to be me now.
No problem tomatoes Carrots, I'll eat everything Cooked raw in cake out of cake.
It doesn't matter I'll eat anything but yeah, it's true.
What about you is there something strange in your eating habits for example you like Cucumbers, but you hate pickles.
It's the same thing but still you completely hate it go figure really, that's strange, that's odd.
What other examples can you give when you might want to say, go figure, really, that's amazing, that's strange?
Can you give us some interesting, some amazing, some very surprising facts?
Then when we hear those facts, we can say, huh, go figure.
It's a great expression.
And I hope you understand it.
