Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to easy English Expressions.
You and me everyday.
Come on! Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions.
So, yesterday we studied the expression to feel stifled.
If you feel stifled, you need fresh air.
You need to take a break.
It's a great expression.
But we also use the word stifle as a verb to stifle someone.
I guess to stifle something is possible too.
but especially you are stifling me and I think you might be able to understand you are not allowing me to breathe you are suffocating me or usually it means this you're controlling me or actually a better word you are restraining me you are restricting me, I want to be free, I want to share my ideas, I want to be curious, but you are stifling me.
You're stopping me from being curious, you're stopping my natural tendencies, you're stopping my emotions, you're stopping my feeling of excitement of passion of love you know I think and many of you might disagree I know I have many educators in my family here listening to the podcast lots of teachers well that's the way tell me do you as a teacher or if you're So now a student, do you feel stifled at school?
Do you think your school or your teachers, are they bringing out your creativity?
Are they bringing out your curiosity?
And the same thing at the office, does your boss encourage you to think freely and be an individual or do you prefer students to just follow the book?
Do you like to just teach from the book?
Do you prefer your employees just follow the rules?
This is a big question and it's my opinion that I don't know maybe I'm But it seems like I think more and more we're stifled uniformity Being like everybody else Seems to be the trend I don't know maybe I'm wrong.
How do you feel are you stifled?
Let's check out a dialogue I'm leaving you why you're stifling my emotions You can be emotional, but not too loud.
I've got a headache!
Oh no, yes! Sometimes if you're in a relationship, it can be stifling.
You want to do this, you want to feel that, you want to express yourself, but your other partner says, no, be quiet!
Don't express yourself!
Don't cry! Don't talk about your feelings!
Don't do this! Don't do that!
Don't do this! Don't do that!
they are stifling you yeah or maybe you are the person who's stifling the other person hey I mean some people prefer calm no craziness they like serenity they like being quiet well I hope that they are happy in their relationships as well as their partner to stifle somebody it's a great expression do you ever feel stifled where at home at work at school who stifles you is it your teacher your husband your dad who is it do I feel stifled yes absolutely that's why I work for myself I'm not joking I used to work at an institute, a language institute, and I felt stifled.
They wanted me to do this and to do that, and I had to dress like this and I had to go to this place and I had to talk about this and I had to mention this.
Ah! Too many rules.
I didn't like it. I felt stifled.
They were nice people, they were very nice people.
But I felt stifled.
Stifled. Just like when I lived in the city, ugh, I felt stifled.
The city was stifling me.
It was loud, it was smelly, I couldn't go outside.
I felt trapped. But now I'm closer to the country, still kind of a city, but closer to the country and I feel less stifled.
Now I teach English at home.
I feel like so much less stifled.
I can teach what I want as long as you guys like it, I can teach it.
Isn't that awesome?
I'm pretty lucky. Thank you so much for that great opportunity.
So once again, leave me a message.
