but it's very common it is, that figures, that figures, T -H -A -T -F -I -G -U -R -E -S.
Now listen carefully to the intonation.
Ahhh that figures, ah, ah, ah that figures, ahah, that figures.
What does this expression mean?
Basically it means, oh yeah, that doesn't surprise me.
Uh -huh, I'm not surprised.
Oh yeah, yup, that makes sense.
Now we can also have the intonation, like this.
Oh, that figures. Uh -huh, that figures.
Yup, that figures. So, coach Shane's favorite food is hamburgers.
Isn't coach Shane American?
Yeah! Uh -huh! That figures.
Of course! That makes sense!
He's an American! Americans all love hamburgers!
That's the idea. It doesn't surprise me.
Yes, that makes sense.
That. figures. Why does this expression mean that?

That figures okay. So why does that figures mean that makes sense?
That doesn't surprise me.
Well, let's look at the word figure F -I -G -U -R -E figure as a noun has the meaning of one of the meanings could be a number.
So the number one is a figure and the number four is a figure.
So if we take the number one and the number four and we add them together, it becomes five.
Ah yes, one plus four equals five.
Yes, that figures. That makes sense.
That is logical. That is correct.
And that's the idea.
