Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane.
And welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me everyday.
Come on! Let's master English.
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English expression.
Thank you so much for listening to the podcast. Today I have a very special gift. It's something that I've been working on, me and Parmie, for the past month.
And I'll tell you about that at the end of the podcast first. Today's expression, it is, to have the guts, to have the guts, g -u -t -s.
Now, if you check out the dictionary, guts can have several meanings, but in this case, to have the guts means to have the courage to do something.
To have the courage, c -o -u -r -a -g -e, to have the courage to do something.
to have courage means to be brave, to not be scared, to be strong and confident.
That's the idea. Are you brave?
Do you have courage?
If there is a scary situation...
are you strong? Or do you run away?
Or do you get shy? Or do you cry?
Do you get scared. Yeah, you know, for me, sometimes I do get scared.
For example, if I'm walking outside and suddenly I see a huge spider, I get scared.
Of course, if I'm with my mother, I don't act scared.
Inside I am scared, But outside I act as though I have guts!
And I say, Ho ho ho!
Look Mom, a spider!
My goodness. Should I kill it?
Ho ho ho! Yeah. I act really tough, but actually when I see a big spider, I'm afraid.
I don't have guts. I don't have the guts to kill it!
But once again, if I am with my Mom, I do have the courage.
I am NOT afraid I do have the guts to kill it or at least to get rid of it yeah oh I don't like spiders let's check out a dialogue I should tell my boss to give me a raise you don't have the guts I'll send him an email No. Ask them face to face.
Oh that's a great example, yeah.
At the company, asking your boss for a raise.
Sir, ma 'am, I've been working very hard and I would like you to acknowledge my hard work with an increase in my salary please.
That's really difficult to ask.
asking for a raise is really tough but if you're going to ask for a raise should you ask your boss face to face in person or can you just send an email, hi boss please give me a raise, boy yeah if you have guts you do it face -to -face.
You know that reminds me I had a friend he's not much of a friend But anyway, he had a girlfriend and they dated for about I don't know two months three months and then he said to me Shane I don't want to date my girlfriend anymore I want to be free the relationships are too much work, and I said well I understand you're going to have to tell her and he said yeah, I'll send her an email right now Now actually said text message I'll send her a text message.
And I said NO! YOU 'VE GOTTA TALK TO HER FACE TO FACE.
And he said, WHY? I'll just send a text.
There. Done. I'm free.
Hahaha! Oh my goodness.
Isn't that horrible?
Would you break up with your boyfriend and girlfriend by sending a text message?
I guess it's easier.
If you don't have guts.
But if you don't have courage, it's much easier to do that.
Can you give me an example of when you did not have guts or maybe some amazing situation where nobody had guts except you?
You were the only person with courage.
Can you give me an example like that?
Please do. Send me your example on Twitter at coachshane, on Facebook, ESL, coachshane.
Or on Google plus. Our community name is LetsMasterEnglish.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times and then I'm going to tell you about my very special treat, okay?
I should tell my boss to give me a raise.
Ha! You don't have the guts!
I'll send him an email!
No, ask him face to face.
I should tell my boss to give me a raise.
You don't have the guts.
I'll send him an email.
No, ask him face to face.
So it's Christmas time.
And once again, I know many of you do not celebrate Christmas.
But when I talk about Christmas, especially, I think of giving and sharing and Santa Claus.
So in America, I think it's America, maybe it's England.
I think it's America.
Anyway, there's a very old famous story, A Visit from Saint Nick.
It's about Santa Claus visiting a house a long long time ago.
Well the poem is very famous and I've recorded the poem, but the special thing is I've also asked Parmi, and Parmi is my webbear, to draw some pictures that describe the poem.
So as you're listening to the poem, you can look at the pictures and hopefully understand what's going on.
Parmi, now Parmi's a bear, But somehow, this bear has amazing drawing abilities.
And Parmi has been working on this for several weeks.
The pictures are fantastic.
It's the first time Parmi has ever done anything like this, and I love it.
Now this is the situation so it's 2014 Christmas.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm going to give you my voice and Parmi's pictures.
These are sketches, it's just black and white.
And then next year, if you like this, next year, what we'll do is we'll upgrade.
I don't know, maybe we'll add color to the pictures or maybe we'll compose some music for the background of the poem or maybe we'll add sound effects.
and I think what we'll do is we'll pick one of those and then that's for 2015 and then for 2016, we'll add another and then for 2017, we'll add another and then it will be complete with my voice, Parmee's pictures, color, sound effects and specially composed music.
This is going to be a long term project and we're ready with stage one and it is available for you right now.
