Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day.
Come on let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Today's podcast is brought to you by Dimitri and Ahmed.
And I'll tell you about those guys a little bit later.
Today's expression is excellent.
Beggars can't be choosers.
Beggars can't be choosers.
Beggars. B -E -G -G -A -R -S.
Beggars. Can't be choosers.
C -H -O -O -S -E -R -S. Well let's look at chooser.
What is a chooser. A chooser is a person who chooses.
Okay. So let's say your family decides to order a pizza.
Okay, let's say there are four of you in the family and for me, I love mushrooms, my mom loves green peppers, my dad loves anchovies and my sister loves, I don't know, pepperoni.
Okay, that's four different toppings and they don't go together very well so, who gets to choose!
In my family, my mom.
My mom is the chooser.
So if we're ordering pizza, we all have to look at mom and say, mom please, please get mushrooms, please get pepperoni, please get anchovies, and my mom says, nope I'm going to get green peppers.
And that's the power of my mom.
She is the chooser.
So the chooser has a lot of power.
So what is a beggar, B -E -G -G -A -R.
Well a beggar, the image of a beggar is that guy, on the street, with no job, no money.
The homeless guy, and he's, you know, he's asking for money or he's asking for food or something like that, right?
Yeah, the life of a beggar is very sad.
But the expression, beggars can't be choosers.
Let's say you're walking down the street and you see a beggar.
And you give the beggar a dollar.
And the beggar takes the dollar and says uhh...
You know, a dollar is now good.
Can you give me five dollars?
Five dollars is much better.
What! Are you kidding me?
I gave you a dollar or you didn't do anything.
You should be thanking me.
How can you ask for $5?
Are you crazy? Right?
A beggar cannot be a chooser.
Or, let's say you see a homeless guy and he says, please give me food, and you walk by and you give him a McDonald's hamburger.
Brand new. And the guy says, oh McDonald's...
oh I'm sorry. McDonald's is not healthy.
Can you give me a healthy sandwich maybe a vegetarian sandwich from Subway what are you crazy I just gave you a free meal and you're trying to ask for something else you are a beggar you cannot be a chooser you have no money you have no right you should be thankful that people are helping you my goodness that's the idea but when we say if beggars can't be choosers, we do not think of homeless people.
We think of people like me.
So, I go to my mom's house, and I say to my mom, Mom can you make me lunch?
And she says, Sure.
So she goes to the kitchen, and she makes me lunch. She makes me some tomato soup and a tuna fish sandwich, and she gives it to me.
And I go, oh, Mom, I don't like tomato soup.
I like chicken soup.
Make me chicken soup.
In this situation, my mom would say, he -he -he -he, beggars can't be choosers.
You came here asking for something for free, you are a beggar.
You cannot choose. If you ask for something for free, take anything.
You cannot choose. Beggars can't be choosers.
Let's check out the dialogue.
here's your new fridge it's a used one I want a new refrigerator for a hundred dollars you're lucky I found this one hey I guess beggars can't be choosers Wow, this guy is asking for a refrigerator and for $100 and he wanted a new refrigerator?
That's crazy. Well, his friend found him one.
It was used, but anyway, a refrigerator.
So yeah, if all you have is $100 and you want a refrigerator, you are not going to get a new refrigerator not a big one you're not gonna get a clean one you're probably gonna get a very small dirty refrigerator for a hundred dollars it's not enough money yeah beggars can't be choosers so if I want to buy a car but I only have a thousand dollars do you think I should go to the Mercedes -Benz or BMW store?
No way! A thousand dollars?
I have to go to the junk yard and look for a car.
Yeah for a thousand dollars, I'm not gonna find a nice car.
Beggars can't be choosers right?
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
Here's your used one.

Oh for a hundred dollars you're lucky I found this one.
