Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning. This is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to resolve to take one night for you.
Committing to doing something regularly that is not work and is not caring for family members will help make you a happier person.
And may help make the new year your best ever.
In my most recent book, Tranquility by Tuesday, I share nine of my favorite time management rules that I think can help anyone make the most of their time.
These are rules that I find myself sharing over and over again.
At this point, I have lost track of how many times I have told people that they really need to take one night per week to do something interesting, you know, a hobby.
Let me explain. A lot of adults' lives look very similar day to day.
People get up, get the kids ready, go to work, collect their family at the end of the day, eat, get the kids to bed, then watch TV.
It's all the same over and over, and there's nothing wrong with this per se, but multiple nights a week of it starts to get a little tedious.
People feel a little dissatisfied.
They want to spend more time on something interesting, but they're not sure how it would work.
Often people say they want more me time, but then they choose flexible things like reading more or taking bubble baths, convinced that it wouldn't work for them to do anything more complicated.
Now, I am not saying you have to do something every night, but maybe one night a week?
Taking one night a week for you.
Still leaves six nights a week for the normal routine.
Choose one night during the week to do something that does not work and is not caring for family.
Ideally, this should be something outside your home that involves a commitment to other people.
You sing in a choir, or play in a band, play in a softball league, run with friends, volunteer at a food bank on a particular night.
Here's why it should be a commitment.
As a responsible person, you will make a commitment happen.
Sure, flexible me time is great, but I can tell you that your desire to read more or take more bubble baths will bump up against someone else's desire for you to do something different with the time.
What are you going to tell them?
Your bathtub isn't going anywhere.
But if you have choir practice at 7 o 'clock on Thursdays, you have a better excuse.
The practice will happen.
You will go. You will reap the benefits of this more active form of self -care.
Of course, this means you need to choose something you truly enjoy.
I love to sing, which is why I am currently singing in two choirs.
I normally sing in at least one.
For a while, I assumed that, like me, everybody knew just what they'd like to do.
But I have since learned that this isn't the case.
Many grown -ups don't actually know what they like to do for fun.
So if that is you, you could resolve to spend the next three to six months figuring this out, and then spend the next six months of the year implementing it.
Yes, it turns out that fun takes work.
But I imagine you can manage one night a week.
If you've got young kids, you can trade off with a partner, a friend, a neighbor, or another relative, and each of you gets one night off.
Or you could hire a babysitter.
Or even look for opportunities where the kids are accounted for, like you run with friends while your kid is at a gymnastics class.
But don't assume that it just can't work.
Resolve to take one night a week for you, and you will start really looking forward to that night.
It will become a tent pole in your week, with everything fitting around it.
You will start to change your story.
Life isn't all work and chores.
You are the kind of person who does fun things.
And that can make this next year the best year ever.
In the meantime, this is Laura.
