For me, leadership is about having a vision and taking steps towards a vision for the greater good.
This is Meggie Palmer.
She's the founder of Pep Talk Her, an organisation that helps women get fair pay and senior job roles.
I'm Pippa from BBC Learning English, and in this series, we're meeting leaders from businesses and social organisations.
organizations we'll ask them for their tips for becoming a successful leader whatever your job is and learn some useful business English along the way.
We're starting with Meggie.
Meggie set up Pep Talk Her in 2016 after her own experience of inequality at work.
Her passion is encouraging women to have the confidence to be leaders and tackling big issues like the gender pay gap and a lack of female bosses so what is Meggie's top tip for the leaders of the future don't be scared of leadership right step into it step into leadership at home among your friendship
group among your community if you see a gap if you see a challenge that you that you think should be solved go ahead and create that change you know it's an exciting time to be a leader and we're seeing you know Greta Thunberg and so many people around the world who are super young are having a huge
impact on the world.
Meggie says that we should step into leadership.
This is another way to say embrace leadership, be enthusiastic about it, and we need to do this if we want to achieve our dreams.
It can be scary and it can be overwhelming.
In particular, sometimes what will people think of me as a leader?
Will they judge me?
That's something that I've struggled with, but what I would say to anyone considering a role in leadership is move through that and step into it because great things will happen if you do.
And what should leaders not do, according to Meggie?
Leaders shouldn't be bullies.
And I think I've observed throughout my career and even, you know, in global politics, sometimes leaders behave like bullies and that's not how you get the best or the most sustainable change.
I think as a leader, it's important to take people with you.
For Meggie, good leaders take people with them.
This means making sure that other people understand what you want to achieve and are passionate about working towards yours or the organisation's goals.
And Meggie has some advice about the biggest challenges facing leaders too.
I think the biggest challenge for any leader is making sure that you're staying true to your values and that you're not veering off course.
so I think it's crucial to have people around you who will be honest.
Veering off course means suddenly changing direction.
It's a metaphor for making the wrong choice and when Meggie says you need people around you who are honest she means people who will tell you when you're wrong.
If you have honest people around you they'll stop you from veering off course.
