Could a bathroom divorce help your relationship to thrive?
Thanks for asking. According to a survey back in the 2010s, the average couple has 312 arguments a year.
So, it's fair to say that arguing is basically part of everyday life when you live with someone.
Household chores are one of the main reasons for arguing and there's one room in the home in particular which is connected to several of the most common argument triggers, the bathroom.
We're talking about leaving stubble in the sink and all sorts of toilet etiquette infringements like leaving the seat up or not replacing the toilet roll.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have your own bathroom?
Well indeed, And that's precisely the basis for the bathroom divorce concept, that some couples have started adopting in an effort to avoid clashes, and potentially reduce the chances of getting an actual divorce.
In March 2025, retired interior designer Debbie Weiner, talked to the New York Post about her bathroom divorce, saying it had not only helped her reach toilet nirvana, but also saved her marriage.
Let's take a listen to a short extract of Weiner's interview with The Post. Now we're both happy at the same time in the same bathroom sharing a space that is each uniquely ours.
The UK media then jumped on the bandwagon with the likes of The Guardian and The Daily Mail soon running features on the bathroom divorce.
asking whether it could be the key to a happy marriage and proclaiming that it could save your relationship.
Isn't this all a bit ridiculous?
Well, it really depends who you ask.
Interestingly, both Michelle Obama and Melania Trump have gone on record vaunting the benefits of his and hers bathrooms. But of course, a bathroom divorce is out of reach to many.
To give you an idea of how much it could cost, the wieners shelled out over $100 000 renovating their home in order to facilitate theirs in the end it's just another lifestyle choice and not too dissimilar to the concept of a sleep divorce where couples sleep in separate rooms to get better rest and avoid snoring or fighting over the duvet we'll be covering that pretty soon in another episode of do you really know.
