Hello and welcome to the English lakenated podcast. My name is Anna and you're listening to week 28, day four of your English Five -Day.
The second season. We get together every day of the working week so that you can slowly but surely start to feel more confident when communicating in English.
By working on those listening skills, expanding your vocabulary and increasing your comprehension.
So, let's begin, as we always do, with a snapshot of what's to come.
Mark was such a lightweight that after just two beers, he was completely sloshed, stumbling around the garden party with a silly grin on his face.
When he tripped and began to plunge towards the swimming pool, his sister jumped out out of her chair without a second thought to try to catch him.
The other guests watched wide -eyed as both siblings ended up splashing into the water together, laughing, despite being soaking wet.
OK, OK. Let's start by looking at the noun lightweight.
Lightweight. We spell this L -I -G -H -T -W -E -I -G -H -T.
Lightweight. Now, you'll notice that when I this fast I drop the middle T so rather than light weight I say lightweight lightweight and this is for ease, lightweight.
But I try to put the T on the end where I can, lightweight.
A lightweight is a person who becomes drunk easily, or is not very strong perhaps in a competition but generally if you're someone a lightweight it's usually in a social environment or referring to going out and having a drink it's someone who cannot handle alcohol.
I am a lightweight if I have a glass of wine but I'm gone so I don't drink very much and I think because I don't drink very much that's why I'm a lightweight my body isn't used to processing alcohol so I am affected by it quite easily.
Are you a lightweight or do you know someone who you would describe as being a lightweight?
Here's an example sentence.
He's a bit of a lightweight, one glass of wine, and he's tipsy.
Okay next we have the adjective sloshed.
sloshed. We spell this, slo -s -h -e -d, slosh'd.
If someone is slosh'd, they are very drunk.
So, I would describe myself as being slosh'd if I have more than two glasses of wine, I would definitely be slosh'd.
I don't remember the last time I was slosh'd.
I have been slosh'd many times in my life.
But I can't remember the last time.
I think I've matured with age.
I've become a little more sensible and I have children so I feel the weight of responsibility of the children.
I feel like it's not appropriate for me to get sloshed when I am responsible for two little ones.
Here's an example sentence.
She was sloshed after just two cocktails.
Next we have verb plange.
Plange. PLU -N -G -E 2 plange.
Two plange is to fall or move suddenly and quickly downwards or into something.
So you might plunge down to the ground or you might plunge into a pool.
You might plunge into a vat of baked beans if you work in a baked bean factory you have a nasty fall, you could plunge into a That, a tank full of baked beans!
That would be a little odd, wouldn't it?
I wonder if you can swim in a tank of baked beans and get be quite difficult?
They'd be like trying to swim through mud.
Anyway, I am going off track here.
So here's an example sentence.
The car plunged off the edge of the road.
Next we have the idiom without a second thought, without a second thought.
Without WITHOU T, a second S -E -C -O -N -D, second thought T -H -O -U -G -H -T.
Without a second thought, this idiom means that you do something, Immediately, without hesitation, or worry.
For example, if my child is in a dangerous situation, I would not stop to think about whether or not I should go into that situation and help.
It would be an instinctive reaction.
I would move on instinct.
I would go immediately into that dangerous situation to rescue my child.
So I would go in there without a second thought, so here's an example sentence.
She quit her job without a second thought and moved abroad.
Next, we have the adjective wide -eyed, wide -eyed.
We spell this W -I -D -E, hyphen, e -Y -E -D.
If someone is described as being wide -eyed, then they have their eyes open wide with surprise or with wonder or with innocence.
We often describe children or young animals as being wide -eyed because they are always looking around at their surroundings, the people around them with these big open eyes taking everything in, they are wide -eyed.
So here's an example, the child looked up at the fireworks, wide -eyed with amazement.
All right. That's our five.
Let's do a quick recap.
We started with the noun lightweight.
A lightweight is a person who becomes drunk easily.
A lightweight. Then we had adjective, slosh!
When someone is very drunk, they are described as being slosh'd.
We had the verb, plunge, to plunge as to fall or to move suddenly and quickly downwards or into something, to plunge.

Okay, if I have one drink, and I'm already feeling very, very drunk, first of all, what Yeah, you could say, Anna is sloshed after just one drink and with that in mind it would be justified to call me a what?
What word do we use for a person who becomes drunk easily?
A lightweight? Right?
Yes, you'd say Anna is a lightweight.
She's sloshed after just one drink.
If I fall suddenly and quickly down into a pool, what verb could you use to describe this fall?
I plunge into the pool.
Yes, I might be so sloshed because I'm a lightweight that I wobble and plunge into a pool.
Hopefully, if I'm in trouble in a pool of water, hopefully you, if you're close by, would react immediately and come and help me.
You wouldn't stop and consider your actions.
You just act immediately.
What idiom could I use to describe this Without a second thought, yes, I hope that if I'm in trouble in the water, you would react without a second thought and come and save me.
Now, if a child is watching something in wonder, they're in awe, their eyes are open, they're very large.
What adjective could I give to this child, wide -eyed.
Yes the child is wide -eyed.
Probably watching this whole event of sloshed lightweight Anna falling plunging into a pool and you reacting without a second thought and you come to my rescue, you are my hero and the child watches wide -eyed as this event unfolds.
There we go. All right!
Let's revisit once again our snapshot.

The music was so loud I could feel it in my chest. Bodies pressed against me as I moved through the crowded garden, trying to find a quieter spot.
The party had been going on for hours and most people were well past their limit.
That's when I spotted her by the pool.
Rachael had always been a lightweight when it came to drinking.
At university, she'd get giggly after just one glass of wine.
Tonight she was clearly sloshed.
Her blonde hair was messy, her dress wrinkled, and she was swaying!
Dangerously close to the pool's edge, while talking to some bloke I didn't recognise.
Rachel! I called out, but she couldn't hear me over the thumping bass.
I started pushing through the crowd but I was too far away." She took another step backwards laughing at something the stranger had said.
Her heel caught on the wet tiles.
Time seemed to slow down.
I watched in horror as she lost her balance completely.
Her arms flailed widely as she began to fall.
Then, with a tremendous splash, she plunged straight into the deep end of the pool.
... the stranger, just stood there.
Why died in useless?
Other party -goers turned to look, but nobody moved.
Rachel's head disappeared beneath the surface.
Without a second thought, I sprinted towards the pool.
My trainers slipped on the wet stones but I didn't slow down.
I could see her dress floating like a dark cloud underwater.
she wasn't swimming, she wasn't moving at all.
I dived in fully clothed.
The cold water hit me like a punch. My jeans became heavy, immediately dragging me down, but I could see Rachel sinking towards the bottom, her eyes closed, bubbles escaping from her mouth.
I reached her just as she touched the pool floor.
Wrapping one arm around her waist, I thick tard towards the surface.
My lungs were burning and my clothes felt like they weighed a ton.
For a terrifying moment I thought we wouldn't make it.
Then we broke through.
I gasped, pulling Rachel's head above the water.
She was unconscious but breathing.
Someone was shouting for an ambulance.
Hands reached down to help pull us out, as we lay, on the cold tiles, Rachel cuffed up pool -water and opened her eyes.
She looked confused and frightened.
"'You're alright,' I whispered, pushing wet hair from her face.
"'You're safe now,' she gripped my hand tightly, unable to speak.
In that moment everything felt different between us.
The party continued around us, but we were in our own bubble.
I had saved her life, but somehow, looking into her grateful eyes, I felt like she'd saved mine too.
The ambulance arrived ten minutes later as they checked her over, Rachel wouldn't let go of my hand.
