With this series, we are all on a voyage together across an ocean of vocabulary.
I am your captain, navigating you safely towards greater confidence and feeling feeling more like yourself when communicating in English.

Let's dive into today's episode, starting with a snapshot.
Fans fought tooth and nail to get tickets as soon as they went on sale.
While some people calmly eyed up the merchandise, others were knee deep in a messy queue that turned into a brawl.
The band gained notoriety not just for their music, but for the chaos at their events.
OK, today's episode is full of very interesting vocabulary, so let's dive into that now.
This is one of my favourites and it is to fight tooth and nail.
nail. If you fight tooth and nail for something, it means that you compete for something fiercely, with determination, like you will use your teeth to bite and you will use your nails to scratch. You are going to really fight for this.
Here's an example sentence.
He fought tooth tooth and nail to get a chance to train with the heavyweight champion.
He was up against tough competition.
Next, we have a phrasal verb to eye up, to eye up.
You'd actually bring those together and have a connecting y sound, to eye up, to eye up.
To eye something up is to look closely at something or someone you are interested in.
So if a person, a young man who's very handsome walks into the room, all the ladies may eye him up, look at him very closely.
closely, oh, what a handsome young man.
They're all eyeing him up.
Or if I'm in a store, a department store, and there are some beautiful dresses and there's one particular dress that catches my eye.
Wow, look at that. And I go and look at it very closely.
I'm eyeing up the dress.
Wow, look at that. That's beautiful.
Have you eyed up someone or something lately?
here's an example sentence the agent had been eyeing up this young talent for a few months before offering him a contract next is an adjective and it is knee deep to be knee deep if you are knee deep you usually follow that with in something if you're knee deep in something then it means you are heavily involved in a situation or a task imagine that the stuff that we're discussing is mud and you are knee deep in that mud.
Means you are completely involved.
You can't escape it.
You're knee deep. Here's an example sentence.
The boss is knee deep in applications for new members to the club.
The promotional offer definitely worked.
Next on our list is a noun and it is notoriety.
Repeat that after me.
Notoriety. Notoriety means the state of being famous, but for something bad.
So you've done something wrong and you're famous for it.
I'm sure that you can all think of a name of someone, maybe a celebrity or a criminal, someone who is famous for doing something bad.
Here's an example sentence.
sentence. He gained notoriety for being the most difficult boxer to train and work with.
Last on our list is the verb brawl.
Brawl. Repeat that after me.
Brawl. To brawl is to fight, but in a rough, noisy, and uncontrolled way.
Here's an example sentence.
sentence. The brawl started as soon as the final whistle blew.
The fans didn't agree with the referee's last decision.
Have you ever witnessed or been involved in a brawl?
I hope not. And if you were, I do hope you weren't hurt.
I'm glad to say I've never been involved in a brawl.
I've come close. I nearly set one off once, but that's a story for another time.
Right, so let's recap.
First, we had the idiom to fight tooth and nail.

This means to look at something very closely because you're interested in it.
Then we had the adjective knee deep.
To be knee deep in something is to be heavily involved in a situation or task.

And finally, we had the verb brawl, which is to fight in a rough, noisy and uncontrolled way.
Fantastic. OK, let's revisit our snapshot briefly.

Max a 17 year old boxer from a small council estate in East London yearned to follow in his father's footsteps and conquer the ring he wanted to become the champion of the boxing world Max was prepared to fight tooth and nail to achieve his dream dedicating every waking moment to getting getting to that top spot.
He eyed up his opponents, analysing their every move, searching for their weaknesses and every day without fail he immersed himself knee -deep in exhausting training sessions.
As his skills grew, whispers of Max's talent spread like wildfire through the boxing community.
Notoriety soon followed him, a testament to his his undeniable potential.
He would brawl as if performing a cruel dance of fists and sweat.
Max always stepped into the ring with a fire in his heart, leaving no doubt that he belonged among the elite.
Each opponent he faced became just another object in the way of his path to glory.
With every punch he threw, Max left a piece of his soul in the ring, refusing to settle for anything less than victory.
He would fight on, pushing past his limits until he stood tall as the undisputed champion of the world.
