Their infants are born weighing nearly 100 pounds and maintain a close bond with their mothers for one to two years, a period significantly longer than other pinnipeds. These calves are known to love "contact," often seeking hugs from their mothers. Acoustically, walruses are remarkably diverse. Unlike the simple "cackle" of an elephant seal, walruses produce a wide array of vocalizations both in and out of the water, ranging from whistling sounds to noises that mimic a "flushing of a toilet."
