Color naming is a dynamic process influenced by culture and commerce. Companies often invent names to evoke specific feelings—like naming a red polish "Santa's Cape" during the holidays. Historically, names like scarlet evolved from the type of cloth rather than the color itself. Furthermore, language dictates how we categorize the rainbow. Some cultures divide the spectrum into only three categories (light, dark, and red), while others, like Russia, distinguish between light and dark blue, or Japan, which historically used the same word for blue and green. These linguistic differences prove that our categorization of color is socially constructed rather than fixed.

The Mystery of White, Black, and Vantablack

Physicists argue that black and white are not colors but expressions of light—white being the full spectrum and black being the absence of it. However, in everyday life, we treat them as valid color categories. The podcast introduces Vantablack, a substance that absorbs 99.965% of the visible spectrum. Because it eliminates the reflection of light, it removes our ability to perceive depth, making 3D objects appear as flat, featureless outlines.

Emotional Associations and Shifting Paradigms

Colors are heavily tied to emotions, often through a blend of broad cultural conditioning and personal experience. While some speculate that red inherently triggers aggression or passion, it is scientifically difficult to isolate this from cultural exposure. Perhaps the most profound takeaway is the fluidity of color meaning. A century ago, pink was considered a "masculine" color associated with aggression, while blue was seen as "gentle" and feminine. As St. Clair emphasizes, these societal rules are not rigid; they change over time. Just as the meaning of "avocado green" shifted from a 1970s fashion staple to a modern association with avocado toast, our relationship with color remains an ever-evolving, mysterious, and deeply personal journey.
