A Path Forward: Five Fundamental Shifts

To move from data to decision, and from prediction to prevention, Nakalembe proposes five critical shifts:

  1. Emphasize Reliability over Perfection: A model that is 80% accurate but delivers a water pump to a farmer is superior to a 90% accurate model that remains confined to a research paper.
  2. Close Data Gaps: We must improve the granularity of our field mapping to ensure predictions are relevant to the actual conditions of smallholder plots.
  3. Finance Proactive Responses: Policies should prioritize proactive planning and investment over reactive emergency relief. Farmers need financial mechanisms to recover their investments before disaster strikes.
  4. Connect Policy to Practice: We need to incentivize the connection between policymakers, technologists, and local agents.
  5. Human Accelerators: Technology cannot replace human interaction. We must partner with extension agents who can bridge the gap between technical data and field application.

Redefining Success

Nakalembe concludes with a sixth, most vital point: we must change how we measure impact. Success should not be defined by the number of projects launched or the technical accuracy of an AI model, but by the tangible increase in a farmer’s income. By focusing on the "extra income" that fosters household resilience, we can finally turn our incredible technological capabilities into meaningful, real-world solutions that allow farmers to thrive rather than just survive.
