📋 Summary

The Emergence of the Zizians

The Zizians are a mysterious, loosely organized group that has recently become the subject of intense scrutiny due to a series of violent crimes across the United States. The group centers around an individual known as "Ziz," a brilliant, self-taught programmer and trans woman born in Fairbanks, Alaska. Ziz attracted a cohort of highly intelligent, disaffected, and predominantly trans individuals who, like her, were deeply embedded in the "rationalist community"—a Silicon Valley-based movement focused on AI safety, effective altruism, and clear, unbiased thinking.

The Rationalist Schism

Ziz and her followers were initially part of the broader rationalist orbit, participating in organizations like the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) and the Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR). However, ideological friction soon developed. Ziz pushed for a more radical interpretation of ethics, specifically regarding "vegan anarcho-transhumanism," arguing that "every sentient animal is a person." Her aggressive tactics, which included blocking a conference with vehicles and wearing black robes while declaring herself a "Sith Lord," led to the group's expulsion from the rationalist community. This isolation served to radicalize the group, as they began to echo each other's fringe ideas without external correction.

Experiments and Allegations

As the group became more insular, they engaged in extreme practices, including "unihemispheric sleep" experiments, which critics claim led to sleep deprivation and, allegedly, the suicides of two members. The group's living situation, often described as a "rationalist fleet" of sailboats and tugboats in the Berkeley Marina, became increasingly unstable. As their financial resources dwindled, the group’s behavior—ranging from wearing gas masks to brandishing samurai swords—drew the ire of neighbors and eventually led to legal troubles, including charges of false imprisonment and child endangerment.

A Trail of Violence

By 2022, the situation escalated from eccentricity to extreme violence. Following a staged death to evade authorities, Ziz and her inner circle were linked to a series of disturbing incidents. Notable events include:

  • The Attack on Curtis Lind: In Vallejo, California, a landlord was brutally stabbed with a katana after attempting to evict the group. Members Alex Lethem and Suri Dow were charged with attempted murder, and later, the murder of group member Emma Baranian, who died during the altercation.
  • The Pennsylvania Murders: In December 2022, the parents of group member Michelle Zoschko were found executed in their Pennsylvania home. Zoschko and Daniel Blank were later apprehended with large sums of cash and burner phones.
  • The Vermont Shootout: In early 2025, members Ophelia Bacolt and Maximilian Snyder were involved in a lethal firefight with Border Patrol near the Canadian border, resulting in the death of a federal agent. Investigators found a "mayhem starter kit" in their vehicle, including night-vision gear and hollow-point ammunition.

Current Status

As of mid-2025, the Zizians are scattered across various detention facilities. Ziz, Michelle Zoschko, and Daniel Blank remain in custody in Maryland, while others are incarcerated in California and Vermont. Despite the overwhelming evidence and the violent nature of these crimes, the group members continue to deny that they are a "cult" or even a cohesive group, often claiming they do not know one another. The saga of the Zizians remains a chilling, evolving case study in how extreme ideological isolation can lead to radicalization and, ultimately, real-world tragedy.

Hey, and welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh, and there's Chuck, and Jerry's here too, and this is Stuff You Should Know.
This is, I guess, a timely, topical, true crime edition, in the three t's coa alert yeah i feel i should sound the klaxon on this one uh yeah we're issuing a coa on this one a pretty a pretty robust one because uh a this is something we don't do a lot which is tackle uh true crime in uh almost real time as far as the fact that none of this is settled uh the alleged crimes we're probably gonna say alleged a lot because uh there's not not even been court dates a lot of times for some of these cases.
What we're, you know, we're talking about potentially six murders in three states by a group that may or may not have done it, that may or may not be a cult.
So just a big COA there.
This is one of the true crimes where like neither one of us are going to be like, well, here's my theory on this because just who knows this has got to play out first. first. And the other big COA is a lot of sort of a disproportionate amount of members of the Zizians who we're going to be talking about are members of the trans community.
