Taking Control of Our Emotional Lives

If emotions are predictions rather than inevitable reactions, we can exert more control over them than previously thought. Barrett suggests two practical strategies:

  1. Cultivating Curiosity: When experiencing intense emotions, one can choose to be curious rather than convinced. By asking, "What are the different reasons I might feel this way?" we can deconstruct the automatic narrative the brain has generated.
  2. Reframing Context: By teaching her daughter to use a "cranky chair" to regulate tantrums, Barrett demonstrated that we can create new contexts to rewire how the brain predicts. Similarly, she notes that we can reframe "butterflies" (arousal) as performance energy rather than fear, proving that we have the power to change our emotional responses.
