  • Twinkling: Stars do not actually twinkle. The effect is caused by Earth's atmosphere, as light is distorted by moving air currents before reaching our eyes. Planets, by contrast, appear as steady circles rather than points of light because they are significantly closer to us.
  • Visibility: Stars are always present in the sky, even during the day; however, the sun’s brightness acts like a "giant spotlight" that obscures them from view.

Navigating the Heavens

  • The North Star: Polaris is unique because it sits "almost directly over Earth's North Pole." While the Earth spins, causing other stars to appear to move, Polaris remains relatively stationary. Due to the "wobble" of the Earth on its axis over a 26,000-year cycle, the North Star changes over millennia; for instance, Vega served as the North Star 13,000 years ago.
  • Stargazing Tips: For beginners, the best approach is to "find one or two patterns that you can find fairly reliably"—such as the Big Dipper or the Summer Triangle—and use those as markers to identify neighboring constellations.

The Southern Hemisphere and Cosmic Phenomena

Moving beyond the Northern Hemisphere, the sky reveals different patterns, such as the Southern Cross. Sapersky also highlights the upcoming Perseid meteor shower, explaining that "shooting stars" are actually "pieces of space debris" burning up as they enter Earth's atmosphere.
