📋 Summary

The Performative Trap of Traditional DEI

Wyvon Hutchinson, a workplace inclusion expert and founder of ReadySet, argues that much of what currently passes for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives is fundamentally flawed. She specifically criticizes "privilege walks," "black squares on Instagram," and "unconscious bias training" as being purely performative. According to Hutchinson, these exercises are ineffective because they attempt to address systemic, deeply rooted societal issues through superficial, individual-level solutions. She notes that while these practices may offer a momentary "revelation" for some, they often force others to "process their trauma," creating an environment that fails to foster genuine progress.

The Roots of the DEI Backlash

Hutchinson acknowledges that DEI is currently facing a significant "backlash," often serving as a "political football" blamed for various societal failures. She identifies two primary reasons for this resistance. First, she views backlash as a "natural consequence to progress," comparing it to historical reactions against civil rights movements. Second, she admits that organizations made "real mistakes" following movements like Me Too and George Floyd. By relying on approaches that were "based in emotion rather than data," organizations failed to produce tangible results, which alienated many and left DEI vulnerable to criticism.

Adapting to an Interconnected World

The central thesis of Hutchinson's talk is that the traditional models of DEI are no longer sufficient because "the outside is creeping in." In an era marked by global conflicts—such as the war in Ukraine—and personal crises, employees are dealing with unprecedented levels of anxiety. Hutchinson emphasizes that 43% of Americans report higher anxiety levels, leading to increased "workplace conflict, absenteeism and disengagement."

To move forward, she suggests that DEI must evolve from performative exercises to practical, compassionate support systems. Her firm shifted its focus to address real-time crises, offering training on anti-Semitism, anti-Arab racism, and Islamophobia, as well as providing resources for "elder care and climate emergencies." This approach acknowledges that the "culture wars are happening in the office today" and that systemic issues like political instability and climate change disproportionately impact people based on their identities.

A New Vision for Inclusion

Hutchinson concludes by proposing an "updated" version of the privilege walk—one that reflects the modern reality of the workforce. Instead of focusing solely on historical privilege, she suggests acknowledging the shared struggles of today, such as those "juggling elder care and child care," those struggling with "chronic illness," or those whose lives have been "disrupted by a once-in-a-200-year weather event." By shifting the focus toward genuine compassion and addressing the actual burdens employees carry, Hutchinson believes we can move past the performative nature of the past and create organizations that are truly resilient and inclusive.
