This lack of activation in frontal areas means these individuals are "less able to regulate and to control and to manage their emotion," a deficit that can spill over into their waking lives.

Re-scripting and Sleep Engineering

Despite the fear they induce, nightmares are not entirely beyond our control. Carr advocates for Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT), a technique involving the "re-scripting of a nightmare's content." By identifying recurring themes—such as being chased or facing tidal waves—and consciously visualizing a new, more satisfying ending for 10 to 20 minutes before sleep, individuals can effectively decrease the frequency and intensity of their nightmares.

This practice touches upon the burgeoning field of "dream engineering." Whether through full lucid dreaming—where one becomes aware they are dreaming—or simply by exercising more "agency" within a dream, individuals can learn to alter their internal experiences. Carr also highlights the potential of emerging technologies, such as wearable EEG headbands, which could one day detect signs of arousal in real-time and provide sensory stimulation to "shake you out of a nightmare or to soothe you."

Ultimately, Carr suggests that while nightmares are distressing, they are part of an "adaptive process of sleep." By engaging with our dreams rather than fearing them, we can potentially harness the brain's natural capacity for healing and emotional resolution.
