Hello listeners, I'm excited we're meeting again.
Welcome to the 8 -Minute English Podcast series on the Learn English Podcast channel.
I'm your host, Nathan.
It's a pleasure to have you with us again.
Happy Halloween, Learn English Podcast listeners.
We hope you have a fun Halloween season.
Halloween is celebrated on October 31st.
It is a traditional festival that usually takes place in Western countries.
People often dress up in costumes and organize fun activities on this day.
Do you want to know more fun activities for Halloween?
Today, we will hear a conversation between Rio, the student council president, and Anna, the new student.
They will talk about the activities people usually do on Halloween.
We've prepared a free PDF for this episode full of useful tips and vocabulary to help with your learning.
Don't forget to check it out.
Now let's start this journey.
Hey Rio, thanks for showing me around today.
It's so different from my school back in Japan.
No problem, Anna. Welcome to the student council.
It's always great to have new members.
So Halloween is coming up and I thought it would be fun to tell you how we celebrate it here.
Halloween? I've heard about it, but we don't celebrate it much in Japan.
What do people do? Oh, Halloween is big here.
We dress up, go to parties, carve pumpkins, and watch scary movies.
I can explain all of it.
Can you share more?
I really want to join.
Sure. At first, let me tell you about costumes, which are a big part of Halloween.
People love getting creative and every year there are new trends.
Really? What kind of costumes are popular?
It depends. Some people choose scary costumes like vampires or zombies while others go for funny or unique ones.
This year many are dressing as characters from movies and TV shows.
That sounds fun. Do you know what you're going to wear?
Yeah, I'm thinking of going as Joker.
It's always a hit. How about you?
Have you thought of anything?
Mmm, I'm not sure yet.
Maybe something simple.
I could try to make a costume myself.
That's a great idea.
I've never been to a Halloween party before.
What should I expect?
Don't worry. It's pretty normal.
You'll see people dressed up in all kinds of costumes.
There's usually music, snacks, and games.
A lot of people like to play Bob for apples or have a dance off.
I think I'd like to try that.
Maybe I can even help with the decorations.
That would be awesome.
We could use your ideas to make it even more creative this year.
What else do people do on Halloween night?
A lot of people like to watch scary movies.
Some people stay up late watching horror films.
I'm not sure if I'm brave enough for that.
I get scared easily.
Don't worry. You don't have to watch anything too scary.
Some people like Halloween comedies or fun spooky movies that aren't too scary.
Oh, that's good to know.
Do you have any recommendations?
Definitely. You could start with something light like Pocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas.
They're fun and not too scary.
That sounds perfect.
Maybe I'll invite some friends to watch it with me.
And I heard you mentioned pumpkin carving earlier.
I've heard of it before but didn't really understand it.
Please share with me.
People carve funny or scary faces into pumpkins then put a candle inside to light them up at night.
Is it hard to do? It's actually pretty simple.
You just need a pumpkin, a knife, and a bit of patience.
You can find many templates online to make it easier.
That sounds like a fun way to get into the Halloween spirit.
Ah, have you tried haunted houses?
No, I haven't. But it sounds fun.
Yeah, haunted houses are made to look spooky and scary.
People dress up as ghosts, monsters, and other scary characters to scare visitors as they walk by.
That sounds a little too scary for me.
Have you ever been to one?
Yeah, I went last year with some friends.
It was scary but really fun.
It's all for fun so there's nothing to be afraid of.
Hmm, I think I will be a fan of carving pumpkins.
Haunted houses are too much for me.
But if you ever change your mind, there are some really cool haunted house events nearby.
Cool. There's another fun activity for Halloween.
Can you guess what it is?
Hmm, I don't know. It's baking.
People make fun treats like ghost -shaped cookies and spider cupcakes.
That sounds so fun.
Do you have any recipes?
Sure. You can make simple sugar cookies and decorate them with orange and black icing.
You can also make witch's brew punch with fruit juice and soda.
There are lots of easy recipes online if you want to try.
I can't wait to try making some Halloween treats.
Maybe I'll bake something for the student council party.
I'm thinking of a little ghost cake.
It will wear a hat with cherry blossoms, which is a symbol of my country.
That would be amazing.
Everyone loves homemade treats.
I'm sure your cake will impress everyone.
Thanks to your sharing, I'm really looking forward to Halloween.
Let me help decorate the student union room.
What could be better?
Let's go. Let's learn some important vocabulary related to our topic.
The first word we'll learn is costume.
This word means special clothes that people wear to look like someone or something, especially for fun.
Rio said that people love to wear creative costumes like superheroes for Halloween.
Now let's move to the next word, carving.
This means cutting into something like a pumpkin to make shapes or designs.

Spooky? It describes something that feels scary or mysterious, often in a fun way.

The last word for today is celebration.
This means a joyful event to honor something like a holiday or achievement.
Halloween is a celebration where people dress up, have parties, and eat treats.
I want to share some information before we end today's podcast.
We often see kids dressed as fun characters for Halloween.
Do you think adults celebrate Halloween too?
The answer is yes. In recent years, Halloween has become more popular in Germany, especially among adults.
Many bars and clubs host Halloween parties and some people decorate their homes with spooky items.
They might not go trick or treating anymore, but they enjoy hosting parties, going to events, or just dressing up for fun.
Even though you're not a kid, you can still have fun with Halloween.
