Permafrost is defined as "ground that remains frozen for two years or more." Structurally, it is a complex matrix of "soil, rocks and sand" bound together by ice. This geological feature is ancient, with some layers having "formed over 100,000 years ago" and extending to depths of "several miles." According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, this frozen foundation covers "around 24% of land in the Northern Hemisphere," predominantly across Arctic nations such as Russia, Canada, and Alaska.
As the Earth experiences global warming, the Arctic is warming "quicker than anywhere else," leading to the alarming thawing of permafrost. Scientists are particularly focused on the "active layer," which is the top portion that naturally thaws in summer and freezes in autumn. Due to rising temperatures, this layer is "gradually getting thicker."
The physical consequences of this process are severe. In some regions, the ground softens and collapses, leading to the formation of "huge holes in the ground which look like meteorite impact craters." The human cost is significant; in Norilsk, Siberia, the instability caused by thawing ground resulted in a 2016 study finding that "60% of all buildings had been deformed," forcing the abandonment of "a hundred residential buildings."
While many may believe that permafrost melting is a localized Arctic issue, it has profound global implications. The process triggers a "vicious circle" of climate change. When permafrost thaws, "microbes decompose the organic carbon plant material in the soil," releasing potent greenhouse gases such as "CO2 and methane," which further accelerate global warming.
Beyond climate change, the chemical risks are substantial. Permafrost stores "around 15 million gallons of mercury." As an "extremely toxic metal," the release of this mercury threatens to "pollute the oceans and accumulate in the food chain," posing a direct risk to global health.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the thawing permafrost is the potential for the re-emergence of "unknown and dangerous pathogens." The frozen ground acts as a time capsule for "past diseases of prehistoric populations," for which there are currently "no medical treatments" available to modern society.
A haunting example occurred in 2016, when a "12-year-old boy died from an anthrax outbreak in Siberia." Although the disease had supposedly been eradicated from the area since the 1940s, researchers believe the outbreak was sparked by an ancient "reindeer carcass" that had been infected decades prior. As the permafrost thawed, the carcass unfroze, releasing the dormant pathogen back into the environment. This serves as a stark reminder that the melting permafrost is not just an environmental issue, but a potential biological hazard for the entire planet.
