Reflections on a Year of Vlogging: Lessons in Creativity and Self-Discovery

After ten months and 304 days of consistent vlogging, the creator reflects on a transformative journey defined by "trial and error," "ups and downs," and significant personal growth. As the one-year mark approaches, these experiences have distilled into three fundamental lessons that serve as a blueprint for anyone looking to refine their creative process.

1. Done Is Better Than Perfect

One of the most significant shifts in the creator's mindset was overcoming "perfectionism." In the past, the creator would spend excessive time on singular projects, only to find that by the time they were finished, the content was no longer "relevant."

Adopting the philosophy that "done is way better than perfect" acted as an "antidote to perfectionism." The creator compares this to a painter choosing to work on "smaller canvases" rather than attempting a "Sistine Chapel" masterpiece every time. This approach fosters a "looser creative process," allowing for a "continuous cycle" of work that prioritizes learning and exploration over the paralyzing pressure of creating a flawless final product.

2. Experimentation Is Key

To avoid feeling "stuck or redundant," the creator emphasizes the necessity of constant experimentation. Whether through refining "behind the scenes" processes or using "storyboards" to map out ideas, experimentation is the only way to discover what truly resonates with an audience.

While the creator acknowledges that experimentation carries a "level of risk"—such as the "painful process of scrapping an idea"—they argue that even failed experiments are valuable. They provide the insight of discovering "what doesn't work." Furthermore, nothing is ever truly wasted; ideas can be "revisited" or integrated into larger future projects. This iterative approach ensures that the work is always "evolving" and growing alongside the creator.

3. Lean Into What You Like

Perhaps the most profound lesson is the importance of authenticity. Early in the creative process, many people fall into the trap of thinking they "need to make things like everybody else in order to be successful." However, the creator argues that the "secret sauce" is actually the "amalgamation of you"—your unique worldview, fashion, interests, and influences.

By "leaning into" personal preferences, the creator moved away from the "traditional definition of vlogs" to create a "hybrid" style that incorporates their personal love for writing and filmmaking. Ultimately, the journey of vlogging is not just about content creation; it is about "rediscovering who I am" and accepting that the work is a perpetual "work in progress." By keeping the process enjoyable and avoiding taking things "a little too seriously," the creator has found a sustainable path to improvement and creative fulfillment.

All that to say, it's been loads of trial and error.
And we have two more months until my one year anniversary since uploading my first ever episode of a vlog and when everything really started to change, honestly.
So, whether you are here for the journey or curious about the process, today I want to talk about three lessons that I've learned over the course of the last 10 months, or 304 days, of vlogging.
