Sedimentary Rocks: The Story of Layers

As sand and other debris—collectively known as sediment—are carried to the ocean, they settle in layers. Over millions of years, the weight of the ocean and the accumulation of new layers compress this sediment, "smooshing" it together until it hardens into sedimentary rock. This layer-cake formation is where paleontologists often discover ancient treasures, such as dinosaur fossils, preserved within the stone.

Metamorphic Rocks: Transformation Under Pressure

Deep underground, where the earth is hot and the pressure is immense, rocks undergo a process of transformation. This creates metamorphic rock. Under these extreme conditions, the original minerals within the rock change, and the straight lines of sedimentary layers may become "wiggly and wonky." If these rocks are pushed even deeper, they may eventually melt, returning to the state of molten magma and completing the cycle.

The Endless Cycle

The rock cycle is not a linear path but a continuous process. Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks can all be recycled through volcanic activity or tectonic pressure. As Dr. Handley notes, the rock you pick up today might have spent thousands of years on land, traveled through ancient rivers, or even existed during the age of the dinosaurs. This endless movement of Earth's materials proves that even the hardest rocks are part of a living, breathing geological history.
