The atomic number, which determines an element's position, is defined by the number of protons in its nucleus. Currently, there are 118 identified elements.

The layout of the table is systematic:

  • Periods: These are the horizontal rows. The table has seven periods, representing the number of electron shells an atom has. Much like our solar system, where planets orbit the sun, electrons orbit the nucleus in shells.
  • Groups: These are the vertical columns. Elements in the same group behave similarly because they share the same number of electrons in their outermost shell.
  • Categorization: Elements are further divided into metals and non-metals. Metals are known for conducting electricity and heat, while non-metals include gases like oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Sub-categories range from "alkali metals" and "transition metals" to "noble gases" and "halogens."

Decoding Symbols and Names

One of the most common questions about the periodic table is why symbols often do not match the element's common name—for example, Iron is "Fe" and Gold is "Au." These symbols are frequently derived from Latin roots, such as "ferrum" for iron and "aurum" for gold. Others, like Potassium ("K"), come from older names like "calium." Some names are even descriptive, such as bromine, which comes from the Greek word "bros," meaning "stinkier."
