📋 Summary

The Legend of the Whale: A Tale of Promises and Evolutionary Origins

This podcast episode, narrated by the storyteller Toop, presents a captivating folktale from Northern Canada that explains the origin of the whale, its characteristic "sad song," and its unique method of feeding. The story serves as both an entertaining narrative and a mythical explanation for the biological traits of these marine giants.

The Problem of the "Huge, Hefty Fish"

The story begins with a concerned frog observing a "huge, hefty fish" in the river. The frog notices that as this fish consumes all the smaller fish while swimming further upstream, the river becomes "narrower and narrower," threatening to trap the fish and disrupt the ecosystem. Recognizing a potential "calamity," the frog seeks advice from his friend, Brother Crow. The crow, equally perplexed, consults Brother Eagle, who lives high on a "mountain ledge."

The Eagle’s Intervention

Brother Eagle, known as the "Thunderbird" or "lightning bird," investigates the situation. After witnessing the fish’s destructive path, the eagle uses his "strong talons" to lift the fish out of the river and deposit it onto a "high top jagged mountain." The fish is left there, far from the water, and the other animals return to their homes, believing the problem is resolved.

The Origin of the Sad Song

Time passes, and a mysterious, mournful sound begins to echo through the valley: "Hmm! Hmm! Hmm!" The animals are frightened, fearing the sky is falling or the ground is moving. Upon investigation, Brother Eagle finds the fish on the mountain, shivering and complaining of the cold. The fish pleads to be returned to the water, promising that if he is spared, he will "open my mouth but I will not open my teeth."

The Whale’s Evolutionary Transformation

Despite the eagle’s initial skepticism—knowing that eating requires opening one's teeth—he grants the fish the "benefit of the doubt." He carries the fish to the vast open sea. Once released, the fish is overjoyed, performing somersaults in the water. The eagle observes from above to ensure the promise is kept.

As the fish begins to feed, he indeed keeps his teeth clenched, "sucking in the food through the slats of its teeth." This feeding behavior allows the creature to grow "larger and larger," eventually evolving into what we now know as the whale. The narrative concludes that the whale’s mournful, haunting vocalizations are the remnants of that original "sad song" he cried while stranded on the mountain, and his unique feeding mechanism remains a testament to the promise he made to the eagle long ago.
