At the heart of this issue is a symbiotic relationship between the coral and a microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live inside the coral, providing it with food through photosynthesis and giving the reef its vibrant colors. However, when ocean temperatures become "too hot," the algae leave the coral, causing it to lose its color and turn white. While bleached coral is not necessarily dead, it becomes significantly more vulnerable to disease and decay without its symbiotic partner.

The Menace of the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish

Beyond rising temperatures, the reef faces a biological predator known as the crown-of-thorns starfish, or corallivores. These creatures can grow over two feet long and are voracious eaters of coral. Their population outbreaks, potentially exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon, pose an existential threat as a single starfish can lay up to 65 million eggs at a time.

Innovative Solutions: Technology and Nature's Predators

To combat this, researchers at the Queensland University of Technology have developed the Cotspot, an underwater drone designed to identify and cull the starfish population. The drone injects the starfish with sodium bisulfite—a solution containing bile—to effectively eliminate them.

Simultaneously, scientists are looking to nature for help by studying the giant triton sea snail. These snails are one of the few natural predators of the crown-of-thorns starfish. Interestingly, the researchers found that the starfish can detect the chemical scent of the triton snail in the water. This discovery is crucial; even if the snails cannot eat the starfish fast enough to curb the population explosion entirely, their presence acts as a deterrent, causing the starfish to "freak out and bolt." By driving the starfish away from each other, these snails make it significantly harder for the pests to breed, providing a glimmer of hope for the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef.
