Hello, Wowzers.
It's me, Guy Raz.
And I'm Mindy.
Welcome to day four of our WeWow Tinkering Challenge.
Now, if you're just joining us for the first time and you have no idea what we're talking about, just hit pause and go back to day one to catch up.
We'll be right here when you're ready.
And if you are caught up, let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?
On day one, we listened to our Wow in the World episode, Sunbrella for the Planet.
We learned that some scientists are trying to solve the problem of climate change by reflecting and deflecting some of the sun's powerful rays.
We jotted down ideas and came up with a question to wonder about.
Our big wonder was...
Can we change the temperature and prevent our ice cubes from melting?
On day two we gathered up materials and made a plan to experiment using the sun's rays to slow down and speed up the melting of ice cubes.
And yesterday, on day three, we designed and tested our experiment.
We used foil hats to reflect the sun's rays away from one ice cube, direct the sun's rays at another ice cube, and then we left one ice cube alone for our control.
Remember, a control in an experiment is something that stays the same no matter what, and it gives you something to compare your results to.
We also measured how long it took each ice cube to melt in each of the three scenarios.
So, Wowsers, that's our experiment.
What did you come up with?
Did you find things around your home or in your classroom to try to change the temperature and melt something?
Or did you try something else entirely?
Did you have any epic fails?
Because if you did, that's okay, too.
We can learn a ton from our epic fails.
We can?
Yeah.
When we come up with lots of creative ideas and try them out, some things might work and others might not.
Of course, because...
Testing is the time to pull out all the stops.
And if ideas don't work, we examine why and then we make changes.
So for our experiment, we took three ice cubes in three glass jars.
First, we placed one in the sun and left it alone.
That ice cube was our control.
We use it to compare the others.
For our next test, we used a foil hat to trap the sun's rays and aim them at one of the ice cubes, so that the sun's rays would be focused on the ice cube.
And for our last test, we placed one ice cube in a glass jar under the foil hat and aimed the hat back at the sky so that the rays would reflect away from the ice.
And then we timed how long it took for each of these ice cubes to melt.
And while our experiment did seem to work, there's still some room left for improvement.
For example, the shiny foil hat was... making it hard to catch the sun's rays.
But it looked really good on your head, Guy Raz.
Well, maybe we don't need the foil hats at all.
Maybe we could just use a sheet of foil, one without all the folds and wrinkles.
Yes.
The wrinkles made the sun's rays scatter.
With no wrinkles, the rays would bounce more accurately.
I think that might actually make a difference.
What does our data show, Guy Raz?
Well, it took about five minutes Four minutes for the ice cube in the sun to melt.
That was our control.
And it took close to four minutes for the ice in the glass with the focused rays.
And it took about five minutes for the one that was shaded under the foil.
I wonder what it would be like with no wrinkles.
Let's try it again with a smaller piece of unwrinkly foil.
