📋 Summary

The Imperfects Returns: A Shift Toward Organization and Community

As The Imperfects kicks off their 2025 season, the hosts—Ryan Shelton, Hugh van Cuylenburg, and Josh van Cuylenburg—return to the microphone with a renewed sense of structure. Ryan introduces a formal "agenda" for the episode, marking a departure from their usual spontaneous flow, which he jokingly refers to as his attempt to become "Organised Hugh" for the new year. The episode serves as a bridge between their "summer school" hiatus and the upcoming season, balancing personal anecdotes with significant announcements regarding the future of the podcast.

The "Nougatore" Chat: Surreal Encounters

In a segment dubbed "Nougatore"—a term the hosts jokingly define as conversation of "no great value"—the team shares stories from their holidays. Hugh recounts a harrowing yet absurd experience in New Zealand involving a tiger snake, a neighbor’s Labrador, and a "snake catcher" who shared a striking physical resemblance to the reptile he was hired to remove. This anecdote highlights the podcast’s trademark blend of lighthearted banter and storytelling, even as Hugh struggles to keep the conversation "worthless" enough to satisfy his self-imposed agenda.

The Ghost in the Room

One of the most compelling segments involves Hugh’s ongoing "ghost" experiences at home. He describes recurring, unsettling incidents in his front room—sensations of being held down or watched—that have left him genuinely distressed. Despite his skepticism, the intensity of these events, including his daughter Elsie also claiming to see someone, has led him to consult a "shamanic healer" named Grant. The situation takes a meta-turn when Hugh reveals that simply discussing the healer on a phone call seemed to provoke the "ghost," leading to a sleepless night. This narrative underscores the hosts' willingness to be vulnerable about their personal lives and unexplainable experiences.

Introducing "A Little More Imperfects"

The core announcement of the episode is the launch of A Little More Imperfects, a new Patreon-based community. The hosts explain that as the show has grown, it has become increasingly "jam-packed with other people's incredible stories," leaving less room for the three hosts to simply "catch up" and share their own ongoing life journeys.

Key features of this new venture include:

  • Exclusive Content: A new show released every fortnight, focusing solely on the three hosts.
  • Community Engagement: A space for listeners to provide feedback, ask questions, and interact more directly with the team.
  • Transparency: The hosts emphasize that this is "added content" and that nothing currently available for free will be moved behind a paywall.
  • A Testing Lab: The Patreon will serve as a space to experiment with new show formats, segment ideas, and "try new things" without the pressure of the main podcast’s production constraints.

Looking Ahead

Beyond the business side of the podcast, Hugh reveals a personal milestone: he has booked an appointment to begin an "ADHD assessment." This decision was inspired by previous guest Janelle Booker and the support he provided to his partner, Jam, during her own diagnosis journey. By sharing this, the hosts demonstrate their commitment to the "vulnerability" that defines their brand.

As the episode concludes, the team looks forward to the next week, which will feature a "biggie" guest, Mick Fanning. The hosts express their deep gratitude for the seven years they have spent building the show, reaffirming that despite the new organizational goals and Patreon projects, the heart of The Imperfects remains their connection to their audience and their shared desire to explore the human experience.

My name's Ryan Shelton, I'm a co -host on The Imperfects, the Jewish grandson of Austrian and English immigrants, and I grew up on and I'm now currently living on Wurundjeri country.
I'd like to recognise the traditional peoples of this continent whose land was stolen nearly 250 years ago.
In particular, we at The Imperfects would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation as the traditional owners of the land on which this podcast was recorded, and we extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The rich storytelling history of the world's oldest living culture is what we proudly pay homage to when we share stories on the imperfects.
