welcome to the a to z english podcast my name is jack and i'm here with my co -host social and today we're doing a vocabulary spotlight episode and this is 2000s slang or the uh aughts they call it or the zero zeros um and uh social our first one is bling bling what is bling bling i guess bling bling
is like um like uh like being iced out we would say now which is like having bling having bling like having like expensive jewelry like that right yeah really really expensive rings and like a nice car or more like jewelry i think bling is just like really but not like not like uh kind of um like diamond
jewelry like flashy flashy jewelry big diamonds you know really in your face kind of look at me you know yeah like bright flashy not subtle but it's you know in your face yeah flashy exactly um this one you taught me so i know you know this one uh what is a bae b -a -e oh bae before anyone else bae is your
love your couple like what you call so it's like baby or anything like that bae your significant other yes boyfriend girlfriend yeah my bae but you're like your number one boyfriend or girlfriend I guess it means that you're only hopefully you're only hopefully you're only right right but it says before
anyone else so that implies that there could be you know secondary and tertiary uh uh significant others but I don't think it I don't think it stands that way it's more like um how your wife is like before your friends you know before anyone else like oh all right why did my mind go in that other place
then okay yeah jack i want to know why you're in that other place i just got myself in some hot water here yeah okay what is uh frunk this one i didn't know there's a candy bar in korea called crunky but uh what is isn't crunk like uh drunk or like drunk and no i mean that shouldn't be right because we're
on this podcast um crunk i'm crunk i'm crunk um no no you can't say that uh this one i think this one you might not know it's a style of hip -hop music that combines combines elements of hip -hop and electronic dance music um oh okay i did see what is it a dance at the end but yeah so there's probably
some music that you listened to in the 2000s that was crunk but i don't know any artists i was pretty much like a fetus because i like through the 2000s i was like yeah right you probably weren't into like you're seven years old you're like yeah yeah okay um this next one is i'm gonna try to say this in not the whitest
guy way that can be said okay uh dollar dollar bills y 'all no jack that literally hurt me um i don't know how like how can we define this i guess it just means like money like you know yeah just means money yeah yeah kind of like a celebration of money like here I got look at all look at these bills
I got all these bills yeah okay these are going to hurt I'm not going to lie to you the next few they're going to be rough here here goes faux schizzle faux schizzle faux schizzle means for sure yes there you go for sure yeah i'm trying to think of an example like uh the aid is english podcast is the best
podcast in the world social sorry you're leaving me hanging you're supposed to say oh for shizzle thank you i didn't understand that i was supposed to respond for shizzle for that so i was like why is he saying that i'm just so confused i'm sorry i'm sorry i thought i thought it was uh i thought it
was being clear it was probably obvious i just no no it's okay all right we're we're homies so it's it's all good um it's all good okay uh the next one is uh jelly and uh i mean i know what peanut butter and jelly means but what does it mean in 2000 slang oh god jelly means jealous yes wow envious really
it should be envy right you talked about that yeah yeah yeah it means you're jealous of well envious truly of someone else's something so it's like oh um oh yeah i'm gonna go to cancun and it's like oh that sounds boring oh why are you jelly it just means are you jealous which really should be envious
but are you envious of me and my experience or whatever i have right right i'm so jelly of your new phone so yeah i just this one doesn't work for me I can't go there I'm so jelly because it's like jelly, jealous it doesn't really take that much more to just put the us instead of the jelly, jealous
it's not a it's not a shorthand it's something else I guess that's what slang is we got two more um what is y2k what what was y2k um y2k that was there was a time when all the computers were going from 1999 to 2000 and that never happened before so people thought that was gonna cost like the end of the world
or something for some reason that i don't understand right i i lived through it i remember i was in uh school in los angeles and everyone was just losing their minds over it they're like did you believe the world was gonna end how were you dealing with it no i thought they're like they're these are computer
software engineers and you know computer scientists like they'll they'll figure out a way to to just you know put in some kind of code that'll allow it the game is on the line and i've only got a shot clock's worth of time To just roll over to the next thing.
and what happened uh on on that on january 1st 2001 was nothing absolutely nothing happened like it was fine it was totally fine it just rolled over to 2000 right it just rolled over to 2000 and nothing happened i wasn't i was probably i was only probably like three years old when the when this went
on so i don't have any recollection of it but i remember when i was older my dad like told me about it um i said um that i didn't i didn't understand why people thought the world would end i thought like it would make sense if people thought technology was going to break down like computers would like
malfunction or something but i didn't understand why that would mean the world would end does that make sense like yeah well i think what it meant was like the like like power plants would stop you know producing uh power and you know what i mean like everything that's it's on some sort of grid uh run
by a computer would oh right the power grid would malfunction right right how that would i just didn't really see how that would be a big deal like yeah i mean that could be a big you know like in an icu unit if the power went out and then they have to use a backup right a lot of people would die sure
that would i could see a lot a catastrophe is happening i just didn't understand like the end of the world mentality oh no yeah and i'm and you shouldn't at a five years old you have to be able to or three years old or whatever you know no but even as an adult i don't understand why people thought it'd
be like the end of the world like i just i understand if they thought like oh the power grid's gonna collapse and we're gonna have like these issues we need to safeguard for but i didn't understand like people literally thinking the world would like cease to exist or like implode or something yeah i
don't know people start shooting each other and you know hoarding toilet paper again like covid i mean that is something that would happen because people are stupid but yes yes i i handled it the way i handle all these things i i just didn't think about it and uh hope for the best and i was right so uh
yeah i didn't worry about it um okay the last one is a fomo and i use this still yeah you have you have this um fear of missing out yes how would you say that in what situations do you have like fomo i i not anymore but i used to be hugely fomo like i was the last person to leave the bar i was the last
person to leave the party i was the last you know what i mean like i always would hang out hang in there as the longest because i didn't want to miss a thing you know i'm like the opposite of like a fomo ist i'm like good for you yeah it's not a good quality only get worse so i'm just gonna go home
because it was fun and i'm like at the peak fun and i know that that is a great time to leave because now it's just like there's a peak of fun and then it just gets crappy from there probably see i never believed that there was a peak i believe the peak was always climbing i'm like and just around the corner
was the you know was the real true fun you know and did you ever learn there was a peak or do you disagree with that theory or no no no no there's definitely a peak I just ignored it I just complete I just decided that I was just oblivious to it or or purposely not wanting to believe that there you
know there's a you know a natural progression to these things where you know you have fun it kind of peaks and then it dies down and it goes away and i thought no we can keep this party going like if you if we just hold on together people we can we can we can crank this up to the next level you know
um right and that is a very dangerous quality in human being to be honest um so i i i don't have that anymore but i was hugely fomo in my 20s yeah i think i think a lot of people are i personally I I guess through trial and error for me you quickly learn that there's a peak because it just gets crappier
like as the night goes on like you're just straggling for fun but like less people are active and like I definitely had a peak of of FOMO phase well the big one is sometimes since since I'll like leave when it seems like it's dwindling down the one that gets me is like if it's my birthday or something
and everyone wants to go home at like midnight I'm like why don't I have friends like she being until 3 a .m um but it's uh yeah if you if you if we were friends I'd have hung in there until 3 a .m you know bro if we were friends at like at that point it just would have been we just would have never gone
home it'd be like 8 a .m and we'd have been eating tacos on the street or something so yeah that that would have been insane but anyway past like 23 i was like there's definitely a peak of fun and then after that peak like everyone's tired um and it's just like fun so you're so you're so smart for figuring
that out early you know because i think a lot of us fall into that trap um that you know there's something you know no it's it the real party starts at 4 30 in the morning yeah you get this other place you know it's like yeah when everyone's quashed nothing good nothing wholesome nothing good ever happened
at 4 30 in the morning you know i know right yeah yeah yeah so that's our last one oh all right okay listeners well if you have any questions about more slang that you'd like to listen to and also if you want to hang in there and listen to me quizzing jack on 2010 and 2020 20s slang, make sure that you
