Vertical farming has already proven its worth in crisis scenarios. Following the 2011 Fukushima disaster, the Japanese government funded vertical farms to provide citizens with "fresh food without fear of radiation." This highlights the technology's potential to provide safe, controlled environments for food production regardless of external conditions.

While critics note that vertical farms can be expensive to build and may consume high amounts of energy for lighting and climate control, proponents believe these obstacles can be overcome. Carlo Ratti argues that integrating the natural world into building design is one of the most pressing challenges of modern architecture. He asserts that this approach will be a "big part of the design of future cities."
