The Unsolved Mystery of Asha Degree: A Deep Dive into a Decades-Old Cold Case

In a recent episode of Crime Junkie, host Ashley Flowers and guest Delia D'Ambra, host of CounterClock, revisit one of North Carolina's most haunting cold cases: the disappearance of nine-year-old Asha Degree. Despite being a case that has been in the public consciousness since Valentine’s Day 2000, recent developments have reignited interest and urgency in finding justice for Asha.

The Night Everything Changed

On February 14, 2000, in Shelby, North Carolina, the lives of the Degree family—parents Iquilla and Harold, and their children, O'Brien and Asha—were irrevocably altered. The family had a typical Sunday, attending church and visiting relatives, before turning in for the night. Due to a local car accident that caused a power outage, the typical evening routine was disrupted. When Harold returned from his second job between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., he checked on his children, finding them both asleep. However, by 5:45 a.m., when Iquilla went to wake the children for school, Asha was gone.

The Investigation Begins

Harold Degree’s frantic 911 call at 6:30 a.m. revealed that Asha’s book bag and pocketbook were missing, yet there were no signs of forced entry. The house remained locked, and Asha had her own spare key. Initial theories explored whether she had left on her own, but as the podcast notes, Asha was described as "timid, shy, [and] super afraid of the dark," making the notion that she would venture out into a storm alone highly uncharacteristic.

Sightings and Evidence

Witness accounts placed a young girl matching Asha’s description walking along Highway 18 between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. that morning. Significantly, she was no longer in her nightclothes but dressed in a "long sleeve white shirt and pants." A truck driver reported attempting to check on her, but the girl fled into the tree line.

Days later, investigators discovered a Mickey Mouse hair bow, a green marker, and a pencil in a nearby shed, along with candy wrappers matching what Asha had received for Valentine's Day. The investigation remained stagnant until August 2001, when a contractor discovered a buried black trash bag containing Asha’s book bag over 25 miles away from her home. Inside, authorities found a Dr. Seuss book and a New Kids on the Block concert T-shirt. Despite being sent to the FBI lab for forensic analysis, these items failed to provide the breakthrough needed to solve the case.

A New Chapter

For over two decades, the case has languished, marked only by the passage of anniversaries and a reward that climbed to $45,000. The recent "wild couple of weeks" regarding updates, however, has brought the case back to the forefront. As Delia D'Ambra explains, the timing is critical as they attempt to reconcile the new information with the long-standing questions. By revisiting the case with "fresh eyes and a whole new perspective," the hosts aim to honor Asha’s story and continue the search for the truth that has eluded investigators since the turn of the millennium.
