📋 Summary

Introduction to Describing Personal Style

In this episode, the hosts explore how to effectively answer an IELTS Speaking Part 2 prompt: "Describe a person who you think wears unusual clothes." The discussion emphasizes that "unusual" is a subjective term, often defined by cultural norms or personal circles. To excel in this task, candidates are encouraged to use descriptive, idiomatic language to paint a vivid picture of the individual's fashion sense.

Characterizing a "Snappy Dresser"

Rory provides a model answer by describing his mother, whom he characterizes as a "snappy dresser." This term, used informally, denotes someone who is modern and stylish. He explains that his mother’s background as a "former fashion editor" explains her tendency to be "experimental with their dress sense." This background provides a logical foundation for why her style choices might be perceived as "out of the ordinary."

Describing Unique Fashion Elements

When detailing what the person wears, Rory employs the idiom "the sky really is the limit" to emphasize that there are no boundaries to his mother's wardrobe. He highlights a wide spectrum of items, ranging from "fake fur" to garments "encrusted with rhinestones." Such specific vocabulary—like "encrusted"—is essential for high-scoring responses. He describes a specific outfit—a "denim and fake fur waistcoat" paired with "black and white pinstripe trousers"—to give the listener a concrete visual example of her unconventional style.

Why Style Choices Stand Out

The summary of why these choices are "unusual" relies on two key points: the local cultural context and the person’s age. Rory notes that his mother’s attire is not "run-of-the-mill," meaning it is not ordinary, special, or exciting by typical standards. Furthermore, he explains that her look is not "par for the course" for an average person in their late 60s. Despite these deviations from the norm, he notes that she "pulls it off flawlessly," a phrasal verb that suggests she wears these bold choices with confidence and success.

Strategic Advice for IELTS Candidates

To organize a similar response, the podcast offers several practical tips:

  • Use Descriptive Vocabulary: Incorporate terms like "experimental," "flawlessly," and "pushing boundaries" to add depth to your descriptions.
  • Idiomatic Expressions: Phrases like "the sky is the limit" or "run-of-the-mill" help demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency.
  • Personal Connection: Acknowledging your relationship to the person (e.g., "Of course, I would say that, I'm her son") adds a natural, conversational tone to the speech.
  • Contextualize: Always explain why something is unusual by comparing it to the "vast majority of people" in your country or social circle.

By following this structure—introducing the person, describing their unique attire with specific examples, and explaining the deviation from social norms—candidates can provide a comprehensive and engaging response that meets the criteria for the IELTS exam.
